The Humboldt Research Award is one of the most prestigious international accolades granted by Germany. As the first Vietnamese scientist to receive this award, Prof. Dr. Phung Ho Hai has achieved a historic milestone.

The award honours researchers with long-term and far-reaching contributions in their fields, reflecting the scientific community’s confidence in their future research potential.

Each year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Humboldt Research Awards to recognize leading international scientists from abroad across all disciplines for their lifetime achievements.

Prof. Dr. Phung Ho Hai completed his Ph.D. program at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 1996. In 2004, he attained his professorship at the University of Duisburg-Essen with a dissertation on quantum matrix groups.

His research spans quantum groups, Hopf algebras, and category theory; his works have been published in leading international journals such as the Journal of Algebra, Annales de l'Institut Fourier, and Mathematische Zeitschrift. In 2006, the German Research Foundation (DFG) awarded him the von Kaven Prize for his research on quantum groups.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) is a private foundation established in Germany, primarily funded by the federal budget and non-governmental organizations. Among its sponsors are the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, and the European Union (EU).

Each year, the foundation facilitates research visits to Germany for over 2,000 researchers. In doing so, it supports outstanding scientists and young researchers worldwide, while fostering collaboration with colleagues in Germany. Since 1953, more than 60 scholarships have been awarded to Vietnamese researchers, contributing to scientific and cultural exchanges between Germany and Vietnam.
