Training on combating human trafficking for diplomats preparing for overseas assignments

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), has organized a training session on combating human trafficking for diplomats preparing for their overseas assignments at Vietnamese representative offices abroad.

The training was attended by 20 diplomats who are set to take on consular and citizen protection duties at Vietnamese representative offices abroad.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Phan Thi Minh Giang, Deputy Director of the Consular Department, emphasized that the training program on combating human trafficking is designed to be in-depth, equipping diplomats with essential knowledge and skills to handle cases involving trafficked citizens abroad, focusing on victims and those in the process of being identified as victims.

Amid the complex developments of human trafficking, especially into scam centers, the specialized training for diplomats who will undertake consular and citizen protection duties at Vietnamese representative offices abroad is of practical significance.

On behalf of UNODC, Ms. Nguyen Nguyet Minh, Head of the UNODC Vietnam Office, highlighted the importance of the training, as diplomats are the frontline force in handling human trafficking cases abroad, thereby contributing to the timely protection of the legitimate rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens.

Ms. Rebecca Miller, Coordinator on Combating Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants, UNODC Asia-Pacific Office, and the main instructor of the training, affirmed UNODC's commitment to closely cooperate and accompany the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant Vietnamese agencies in combating human trafficking.

During the two-day training, in addition to presentations by UNODC experts and the Consular Department, participants engaged in group discussions, case studies, and practiced interviewing skills and victim screening.
