Vietnam and international community mark International Day against Nuclear Tests

Attending and speaking at the session were UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), representatives from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and numerous representatives from UN member states.
In his opening remarks, the UN Under-Secretary-General emphasized that 80 years after the first atomic bomb tests and bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, humanity still faces the ongoing threat from these weapons of mass destruction. He also affirmed that ending nuclear tests is a shared responsibility to ensure international peace and security.
As the world prepares to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) opening for signature, the CTBTO Secretary-General and representatives from many countries called on all nations that have not signed or ratified the CTBT to urgently complete this process.

Speaking at the session, Deputy Head of Vietnam's Permanent Mission to the United Nations Nguyen Hoang Nguyen reaffirmed Vietnam's steadfast and consistent stance in supporting all disarmament efforts, opposing nuclear weapons proliferation, while ensuring the right of countries to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
On this occasion, the Vietnamese representative highlighted the significance of the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and called on all countries to actively contribute to strengthening this process.
Vietnam, along with ASEAN countries, also called for the support of UN member states for the implementation of the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), considering it a significant contribution to promoting regional and international peace and security.
