The national electricity load continuously breaks new records amid prolonged extreme heat, placing significant pressure on the operation of the national power system. In response, on May 25, in Hanoi, the 2026 Electricity Supply Assurance Steering Committee of EVN and the National Load Dispatch Center (NSMO, under the Ministry of Industry and Trade) convened to discuss solutions. The meeting was chaired by EVN General Director Nguyen Anh Tuan.
Ensuring efficient operation and electricity production
In May 2026, the power system is facing the most stressful period of the dry season. According to information from NSMO, at 13:40 on May 25, the national load capacity reached a record 55,196 MW. The North set a new record with 27,955 MW (an increase of 5.8% compared to the record on May 15); the Central region reached 5,380 MW, and the South reached 22,109 MW. The load is expected to continue rising due to widespread extreme heatwaves until the end of August and early September.
In response, EVN and its member units have been urgently implementing a series of solutions. EVN's power plants ensure fuel readiness according to NSMO's dispatch orders: thermal power maintains coal inventory higher than planned, gas and oil fuel are sufficient, and hydropower reservoirs maintain good water levels.
The entire EVN is also enhancing technical measures to operate safely and efficiently, strictly adhering to NSMO's procedures and dispatch orders.
For the transmission grid, EVN focuses on strengthening inspections of weak points, line corridors, substations, and high-voltage transmission lines; preparing adequate personnel and spare materials for quick incident handling; and accelerating the installation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The Electricity Corporations are tasked with coordinating with local authorities and major customers to promote the Demand Side Management (DSM) program, load shifting and adjustment (DR), advocating and supporting customers in installing rooftop solar power, and encouraging the use of backup diesel generators during peak hours.

Enhancing load adjustment and electricity saving
At the meeting, EVN General Director Nguyen Anh Tuan emphasized the thorough preparation of the units, ensuring the system is always in a ready state, avoiding fuel shortages or passivity in the face of incidents.
He particularly highlighted the crucial role of load adjustment (DR) and electricity saving solutions during challenging operational periods, contributing to the implementation of Directive 10/CT-TTg of the Prime Minister.
EVN requires the entire Group to strictly implement electricity saving measures starting from the headquarters, continuing to coordinate with localities to integrate electricity saving into daily life. Additionally, it strengthens communication and warnings about fire and explosion risks due to overload, especially incidents after the meter.
EVN leadership also requests Electricity Corporations to proactively work with manufacturing customers to implement load adjustments, reducing pressure on the system.
As the load continues to rise, EVN urges relevant parties to urgently bring the S1 unit of Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant into operation to supplement supply.
EVN General Director also tasked the Vietnam Electricity Trade Union with enhancing health care and motivating workers operating outdoors and on duty in extreme weather conditions.

Thorough preparation from the beginning of the season
Previously, at the onset of the 2026 heatwave season, EVN issued directives to Electricity Corporations to implement measures ensuring electricity supply, customer care, and electricity saving communication and guidance.
For ensuring safe, stable electricity supply and grid operation, EVN requires regular inspections and maintenance of the power grid system to ensure safe, efficient electricity supply, minimizing local overloads and grid incidents leading to power outages. It limits scheduling construction, major repairs, regular maintenance, and periodic meter replacements during the dry and hot season; ensures compliance with power cut and restoration schedules as announced, particularly avoiding power cuts for maintenance and renovation on days with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius, except in force majeure cases.
Regarding customer care and electricity saving communication, EVN has requested proactive and enhanced dissemination and guidance for customers on how to use electricity economically and efficiently through mass media. It advises and warns customers when using high-consumption electrical devices during heatwaves. Additionally, EVN encourages electricity units to guide and encourage customers to use customer service applications/websites to monitor daily electricity consumption levels. In case of abnormal consumption increases, customers should proactively notify the electricity unit.
