Investing in modern and synchronized power infrastructure
In 2027, Vietnam is honoured to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation 2027 in Phu Quoc, An Giang Province. This is a particularly important political, diplomatic, and economic event, not only affirming the national position and prestige but also opening up tremendous development opportunities for the locality. In this context, ensuring a stable and safe power supply is identified as one of the key tasks.
To fulfill this responsibility, units under Vietnam Electricity (EVN), specifically the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC), are accelerating the construction progress and promoting key projects to serve APEC 2027.
According to the general orientation, ensuring electricity for APEC 2027 in Phu Quoc focuses on three main pillars: upgrading the power grid infrastructure, enhancing stable supply from the mainland, and developing a high-capacity backup system.
Ongoing projects include upgrading substations, constructing 110kV transmission lines, and applying smart technology in operating the power system in key areas such as conference centers, accommodation zones, and event venues.
Additionally, undergrounding the power grid is prioritized to ensure urban aesthetics, increase safety, and minimize operational risks. Concurrently, Phu Quoc is aiming to build a synchronized, green, clean, and smart infrastructure system, not only serving APEC but also laying the foundation for long-term development.

Reviewing the situation, racing against time
Day and night, the sound of construction machinery echoes continuously at key projects serving APEC 2027. Thousands of engineers, workers, and machinery operate non-stop, resources are maximized, and progress is monitored hourly to ensure the project meets its deadline.
On May 13, a delegation from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, led by Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long, inspected the implementation of key 110-220kV power grid projects in the Phu Quoc special zone. The inspected projects include the 220kV Phu Quoc substation, the 110kV Phu Quoc - Nam Phu Quoc transmission line, and the 110kV Phu Quoc - Bac Phu Quoc transmission line.
On-site, the Ministry of Industry and Trade leaders listened to reports from EVNSPC, the Southern Power Project Management Board, and the An Giang Power Company on the construction progress of key items, including foundation work, pole erection, wire pulling, grounding, and the construction of the 220kV Phu Quoc substation, as well as difficulties and obstacles encountered during implementation.
For the 220kV Phu Quoc substation, the leveling of the 110kV and 220kV yard areas is basically complete. Control house, retaining walls, box culverts, rest areas, security houses, and equipment foundations are being simultaneously implemented. Many items have completed concrete pouring for foundations and main structures.
For the 220kV transmission line, units have completed wire pulling for many sections with a total length of over 3.3/15.3km, and continue to install accessories and pull wires for the remaining sections. According to the plan, the project will be operational by September 2026, ahead of the schedule set by EVN.
According to EVNSPC, the unit is closely coordinating with local authorities to overcome difficulties, determined to complete the power connection by May 31, 2026, to ensure the N-1 criterion for the southern island area.
For the 110kV Phu Quoc - Bac Phu Quoc transmission line project, over 40km long with a total investment of nearly 353 billion VND, 42/75 foundation positions have been handed over. Foundation casting has been completed for 14 positions, with 25 other positions under construction.

Meanwhile, the leadership of An Giang Province is also taking decisive action. The provincial People's Committee has issued a Coordination Plan with EVNSPC and established a Steering Committee for projects and power works in the province. Accordingly, the People's Committee of An Giang has directed departments, agencies, and the People's Committee of the Phu Quoc Special Zone to develop detailed plans for each project and foundation position, assigning responsibility to leaders and mobilizing the entire grassroots political system; departments, agencies, and the People's Committee of the Phu Quoc Special Zone have also provided support and closely coordinated with the power sector in overcoming difficulties and obstacles.
With the concerted efforts of EVN and the An Giang authorities, the preparation of power infrastructure for APEC 2027 is being implemented with high determination towards the highest goal: ensuring a stable, safe, and continuous power supply for this international event. It can be said that ensuring power supply for APEC 2027 is not only a technical task but also carries political significance, contributing to the overall success of the event, thereby demonstrating Vietnam's organizational and operational capacity to international friends.
