On the afternoon of June 8, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ngo Le Van, Chairman of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, held a working session with the delegation from the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee, led by Mr. Hoang Xuan Tan, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee. The meeting aimed to implement support for the locality in economic diplomacy, cultural diplomacy, and people-to-people diplomacy, with a particular focus on coordinating the organization of the 2nd Peace Festival in 2026.
Following the success of the first Peace Festival held in 2024, the second festival, themed “From Memory to Future – Quang Tri for Peace,” will feature a series of 7 main activities and 4 supporting activities, spanning from April to December 2026. The festival aims to honor the value of peace, commemorate and pay tribute to heroes and martyrs, remember war victims, and call on humanity to join hands in building peace. It also seeks to promote the achievements of Quang Tri in particular and Vietnam in general, contributing to enhancing the country's position and image and establishing Quang Tri as a cultural space for peace.
During the session, Deputy Minister Ngo Le Van praised the proactive efforts of the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee in coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs across all areas of cooperation in recent times. The Deputy Minister emphasized that Quang Tri is a land with a special symbolic value in the nation's history, associated with the aspiration for peace, national reunification, and the will to rise after the war.
Regarding the preparations for the second Peace Festival, the Deputy Minister noted that while the 2024 festival focused on war memories and honoring heroes and martyrs, the 2026 festival has expanded its message towards peace, development, and the future.
In the context of post-merger and restructuring efforts that have endowed Quang Tri with significant development potential in heritage, tourism, border economy, and logistics, Deputy Minister Ngo Le Van believes that the festival is not only a cultural-tourism event for the locality but also carries profound humanitarian diplomatic significance. It is an opportunity to promote the image of the province and Vietnam to the world and has the potential to develop into a national-scale festival.
In the spirit of “diplomacy centered on people and localities,” Deputy Minister Ngo Le Van affirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will accompany and actively coordinate with Quang Tri province in key tasks such as supporting connections to invite diplomatic delegations, organizations, and foreign partners to attend the event; coordinating in promoting the festival, organizing international press conferences in Hanoi, and assisting foreign journalists and press attachés. During the meeting, Deputy Minister Ngo Le Van directly assigned relevant units to work specifically with the province to prepare and organize the festival in the best possible way.
Additionally, regarding heritage development, Deputy Minister Ngo Le Van suggested that the province build historical memory dossiers such as Hien Luong Bridge - Ben Hai River and Vinh Moc Tunnels to submit to UNESCO for nomination. He affirmed that he would always accompany the province to achieve results similar to Phong Nha - Ke Bang, which was recently nominated as a World Biosphere Reserve by the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme, bringing Vietnam's total heritage count to 78.
Vice Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee Hoang Xuan Tan expressed his gratitude for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' companionship in all areas of cooperation, especially their readiness and proactiveness in supporting the organization of the 2nd Peace Festival in 2026. He also stated that after the festival, the province will coordinate with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to develop a proposal to the Prime Minister to elevate the Peace Festival to a national-level festival and gradually build a War Memory Museum and Peace Park to make Quang Tri an international peace destination.
