Preserving and promoting traditional craft villages

Bac Ninh is renowned for its many traditional craft villages. The province currently has 65 craft villages, including 41 traditional ones and 24 newer craft villages. The scope of production in these villages is diverse, spanning nearly all economic sectors - from agricultural and food production, specialty food processing, to the making of household tools, handicrafts, and artistic products.

With a long and rich history, some of Bac Ninh’s traditional craft villages are well-known throughout Vietnam and have become iconic when referring to the Quan họ region. These include: Phu Lang pottery village (Que Vo), Dong Ho folk painting village (Thuan Thanh), wood carving villages in Dong Ky and Phu Khe (Tu Son), Dai Bai bronze casting village, Xuan Lai bamboo and rattan weaving village (Gia Binh), and Tam Tao Quan họ folk singing village (Tien Du), among others.

From 2022 to 2025, Bac Ninh has focused on preserving and developing these crafts and villages in order to safeguard and promote the province’s traditional cultural values and heritage.

At the same time, efforts are being made to boost production, enhance product competitiveness and added value, create jobs, and increase local incomes. The province is also working to protect landscapes and living spaces, improve the environment, and develop cultural villages and residential areas, contributing to sustainable socio-economic development in rural areas.

Bac Ninh has set planning directions for production zones and craft village industrial clusters, while developing infrastructure linked to craft village tourism. The province also encourages the adoption of modern science, technology, and new production methods in small-scale industrial and handicraft manufacturing.

Bac Ninh is placing a strong emphasis on supporting investments in modern machinery and equipment, as well as encouraging the use of environmentally friendly raw materials to reduce pollution in craft villages. The province is also developing plans and roadmaps to gradually and thoroughly relocate production areas away from residential zones. The relocation of production facilities to designated craft village industrial zones and clusters is being actively implemented.

In parallel, Bac Ninh continues to promote product consumption, trade promotion, brand building, and trademark development. Efforts are being made to improve designs and product quality in traditional craft villages. There is a strong push to link craft villages with community-based and experiential tourism routes—especially by supporting local facilities in expanding production and service businesses while preserving and promoting the traditional cultural identity of the nation and the local area.

Focus on developing key craft villages and signature Industries

Looking ahead, Bac Ninh is rolling out a plan to strengthen the Party's leadership in guiding the development of rural industries through to 2030.

According to the plan, the province’s development orientation for rural industries through 2030 focuses on selecting and developing key craft villages and signature industries with strong economic value, cultural significance, and high competitiveness; investing in scientific and technological innovation, ensuring product quality and value, and promoting investment to transform traditional craft industries into a thriving commodity-based economy.

Bac Ninh is also prioritizing investment in the preservation and promotion of traditional craft industries associated with the province’s rich Kinh Bac cultural heritage. Specific measures are being implemented to preserve and showcase traditional products and production methods, serving both research and the development of craft village tourism. The province is developing concrete plans and timelines to address, shut down, or transition the economic models of craft villages and production facilities that cause environmental pollution.

To achieve these goals, the Bac Ninh Provincial People’s Committee has directed departments, sectors, and localities to thoroughly disseminate and seriously implement the Party’s guidelines and resolutions on rural industry development. This is aimed at enhancing the accountability of the entire political system, particularly the role and responsibility of leaders in preserving and developing craft villages and rural industries. These efforts are identified as key tasks tied to the province’s annual socio-economic development goals.

Bac Ninh will continue to draft and adjust detailed plans for craft village industrial clusters; review and develop specific plans for different types of villages—including those that need preservation and restoration; those requiring investment in science and technology transfer and infrastructure upgrades linked to tourism development; and those that should be limited, shut down, or restructured under new industries or relocated according to regulations. The province will refine policies to support training and capacity building for artisans, skilled workers, and human resources in support of craft village development.

Notably, Bac Ninh will continue to assist production facilities and enterprises in craft villages with registering and protecting trademarks for craft and rural industry products. An official online platform will be developed to introduce, promote, and sell these products.

Additionally, the province is stepping up efforts to promote trade, introducing products on trading floors, e-commerce platforms, and at trade fairs and exhibitions. It will also work to promote the image of traditional craft villages and artisans and showcase products tailored to various rural industry sectors at tourist destinations and designated product display and sales centers both within and outside the province.

The preservation and promotion of traditional craft villages not only supports Bac Ninh’s rural socio-economic development, but also helps safeguard tangible and intangible cultural values that embody the province’s distinctive and unique identity.
