Vietnam launches nation’s largest-capacity submarine cable system

WVR - The Asia Direct Cable (ADC), Vietnam’s highest-capacity undersea fiber optic system to date, officially went into operation in early April, according to Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group.

Spanning approximately 9,800 kilometers, the ADC links Vietnam with China, Hong Kong (China), Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, and Japan. The cable system connects directly to three of Asia’s key data hubs—Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan - greatly enhancing regional digital connectivity.

With a design capacity of 50 terabits per second (Tbps), the ADC surpasses the combined international capacity of Vietnam’s five existing submarine cable systems (IA, AAE-1, APG, AGG, and SMW-3) by 125%, while offering significantly higher transmission speeds.

Viettel is the sole Vietnamese investor in the project. The company fully owns the cable’s branch landing in Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province, as well as part of the main international transmission route.

Developed at a total cost of USD 290 million, the ADC is the result of a multinational consortium that includes nine leading telecommunications companies: Viettel (Vietnam), SoftBank (Japan), Tata Communications (India), Singtel (Singapore), China Telecom, China Telecommunications Corporation, China Unicom (China), National Telecom (Thailand), and PLDT (Philippines).

The ADC is expected to strengthen Vietnam’s digital infrastructure, improve internet stability and speed, and meet the growing demand for international connectivity in the region.
