Tuyen Quang ensures students keep learning during typhoon season through digital transformation

Heavy rains and sudden floods cut off many roads, forcing schools to suspend in-person classes. Yet, thanks to proactive digital transformation efforts, the education sector in Tuyen Quang has managed to keep students learning, which nurtures self-study habits and resilience in the face of adversity.

Overcoming Floods with a Spirit of Self-Learning

For the past two years, Tuyen Quang has implemented the KAV Open School, helping teachers and students become familiar with digital learning. The initiative is a collaboration between the provincial Department of Education and Training, the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), and The Vietnam Foundation, aimed at innovating math education in line with Vietnam’s 2018 General Education Program.

Through KAV, students from primary to high school are guided to use the Khan Academy platform for lessons, exercises, and progress tracking. Unlike classes on Zoom or Google Meet, this model enables students to learn anytime, anywhere, with just a phone or computer which have an Internet connection.

Even during power outages or network disruptions, students can still learn with downloaded lessons, helping them maintain their learning progress.

When Tuyen Quang started to implement the Open School model, there were many schools that lacked equipment, and teachers lent personal laptops or opened computer labs for students to practice. Gradually, students became more comfortable with technology, submitting their assignments on time and studying independently.

Ms. Nghiem Lan Thanh, Principal of Trung Mon Primary School (Minh Xuan Commune), shared: “When the roads were blocked, we held quick meetings with teachers to switch to online teaching and guide parents on how to log in. As a result, even when in-person classes were suspended, students stayed disciplined and kept learning.”

Trung Mon Primary School’s experience mirrors that of many schools across the province. Each small phone screen and every flicker of light during short periods when power is available has become a testament to the mountainous students’ determination to learn.

Companionship and Adaptation

Ms. Dang Thi Thuy Hang, a teacher at Trung Mon Primary School, shared: “Despite the challenging circumstances, many students studied on small mobile phones but still tried their best to complete their lessons. With teachers closely accompanying them, the students have managed to maintain their learning performance.”

At Hong Thai Secondary School, Ms. Le Hai Yen shared that assigning homework through the Khan Academy platform helped students maintain their learning pace and become more proactive.

For students, this way of learning brings fresh and engaging experiences. Nguyen Duc Anh, a fifth-grade student, said what he enjoys most is that the system instantly shows whether his answers are right or wrong, helping him know exactly what to correct. Occasionally receiving badges for completing multiple lessons in a row, Duc Anh said he was delighted and motivated to keep learning.

Behind this perseverance is the support of parents. Mr. Phan Nghia Trong, a parent from Minh Xuan Commune, explained: “We were worried when our children had to stay home for many days. But with this new learning method, everything remained consistent. Teachers monitored progress closely, and our children developed habits of self-learning and time management - something our family truly appreciates.”

Quick Response, Toward Comprehensive Digitalization

As of now, 100% of students in Tuyen Quang have KAV accounts, with over 80% using their accounts to learn regularly. All schools have fibre-optic Internet service and are equipped with computer labs, electronic gradebooks, and administration software.

The provincial education sector aims to complete full data integration with the local government service platform (LGSP) by 2025, along with digital report cards, online enrollment, and e-exam registration. By 2030, all educational documents and management processes will be digitized, with a strong push for STEM education and artificial intelligence applications in teaching and learning.

Beyond simply “ensures students keep learning” during natural disasters, Tuyen Quang is steadily advancing its digital education transformation - turning policy into practice and realizing the Politburo’s Resolution No. 71 on breakthroughs in education and training development.
