With a total of 16 gold medals, 5 silver medals, 11 bronze medals and 2 prestigious trophies, this marks the second time the Vietnamese culinary team has secured victory at a major international competition under the auspices of the World Association of Chefs' Societies (Worldchefs).

This outstanding achievement not only signifies a remarkable step forward for Vietnam’s pastry industry but also affirms the growing competence and global integration of the country’s young chefs on the international culinary stage.

The Battle of the Pastry & Bakery competition was organised by the Penang Chefs Association in Malaysia, under the professional endorsement of Worldchefs - the world’s leading professional body in the culinary field.

Taking place in the coastal city of Penang, the event brought together over 400 chefs from countries and territories including Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, China, Republic of Korea and Taiwan (China).

Participants competed in a range of categories, from wedding cakes, chilled desserts and artistic bread to chocolate sculpture and intricate sugar art pieces.

The Vietnamese delegation was co-organised by the Saigon Professional Chefs’ Guild, under the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, and the Vietnam Pastry Alliance, under the Vietnam Tourism Association.

The team comprised 15 contestants from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Vinh Long, Phu Quoc, and Da Nang, led by Head Chef Le Thi Kieu Oanh (Kieu Oanh - Cherry).

Over three intense competition days, the Vietnamese team demonstrated their composure, thorough preparation, and strong team spirit. Notably, chef Duong Minh Tri delivered an exceptional performance, winning three individual gold medals and being awarded the Best Chef of the Competition trophy.

Vietnam also claimed the overall championship trophy, a result that highlighted the team’s consistency and excellence across all categories.

Shortly after the competition concluded, Head Judge Chef Kenny Kong from Singapore sent an official letter to the Vietnam Tourism Association to extend his congratulations.

In the letter, he wrote: “I witnessed the Vietnamese team’s tireless dedication, exceptional creativity, and outstanding teamwork. Under the expert leadership of Head Chef Kieu Oanh - Cherry, they demonstrated exquisite technical skill, from wedding cakes to artistic sugar works.

Their victory, including the top awards for Best Pastry and Best Bread, was thoroughly well-deserved. My warmest congratulations to the entire Vietnamese team”.

At Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ms Nguyen Thi Khanh, Vice President of the Vietnam Tourism Association and President of the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, personally welcomed the team home in an atmosphere of warmth and emotion.

Speaking at the welcome event, Ms Khanh shared: “I am deeply moved to receive such a dedicated, talented, and passionate team. You have brought great joy and pride to Vietnam’s tourism and culinary sectors.

Your success is not only a win for Vietnamese pastry but also a powerful affirmation of Vietnamese cuisine’s standing in the regional arena”.

The team’s resounding success was the culmination of rigorous training and tireless effort. In the days leading up to the competition, members of the team slept as little as one hour per night, meticulously perfecting every detail of their entries, from baking techniques to precise decoration.

Their poetic wedding cakes and vivid creations made from sugar and chocolate, reminiscent of fine sculptures, left a lasting impression on the judges and international audience alike.

Under the guidance of Head Chef Kieu Oanh, the team not only excelled in the competition but also conveyed the image of a creative, confident and highly professional Vietnam.

Victory in Malaysia represents more than medals and trophies. That is a source of immense pride for Vietnamese chefs and for the Vietnam Pastry Alliance and Vietnam Chefs’ Association, both of which are members of the Vietnam Tourism Association. Above all, it affirms the rising stature of Vietnamese pastry, a field steadily elevating itself to stand alongside the culinary powerhouses of the region and the world.
