Around 1 PM on July 11, the canoe with registration number AG 26751, operated by Ocean Pear Island Company, was carrying over 30 tourists and crew members from Hon May Rut in the An Thoi sea area to An Thoi Port, Phu Quoc Special Zone, An Giang Province. Approximately 400 meters from Hon May Rut, the canoe encountered an issue and capsized, causing all passengers and crew to fall into the sea.

The incident resulted in 15 fatalities, while 21 people were fortunately rescued.

Upon receiving the information, the Phu Quoc Special Zone authorities immediately directed functional forces to urgently coordinate with locals to reach the scene and rescue the victims. Thanks to timely rescue efforts, over 20 individuals were brought ashore and are receiving intensive medical care.

That evening, the Prime Minister issued an urgent directive to address the aftermath of the severe waterway traffic accident in Phu Quoc Special Zone, An Giang Province, to the Ministers of Defense, Public Security, Foreign Affairs, and Construction; and the Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee.

The Prime Minister also extended heartfelt condolences to the victims and expressed deep sympathy to the families of the deceased. He instructed the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Construction, An Giang provincial leaders, and the police, medical, coast guard, and border forces to focus on mitigating the accident's consequences.

To promptly address the aftermath and prevent similar traffic accidents, the Prime Minister requested the Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee to direct provincial agencies and units to provide all necessary medical and pharmaceutical conditions to treat the injured, minimizing losses of life and property for residents and tourists; and to organize visits and support for the families of the deceased victims.

Upon receiving the information, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a diplomatic note to the Indian Embassy in Hanoi and the Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City. The Vietnamese Embassy in India also notified the Indian Ministry of External Affairs about the incident. Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung sent a condolence message to Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and the victims' families, affirming that the Vietnamese Government has directed relevant agencies to implement all necessary measures to support the victims.

Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung also instructed units within the Ministry and Vietnamese Representative Missions in India to closely coordinate with the Indian Embassy in Hanoi, the Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, and relevant agencies to provide timely support and continue collaborating with India in addressing the consequences of this tragic accident.

Notably, a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang, along with leaders from the Consular Department and the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City, directly visited the scene to closely coordinate with local authorities, the Indian Embassy in Hanoi, and the Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City to assist the victims; guide necessary procedures for the deceased tourists' funerals, and expedite the repatriation of the bodies.

Additionally, in a Facebook post, the Indian Embassy in Vietnam expressed gratitude to Vietnamese authorities for facilitating the swift completion of necessary procedures to expedite the repatriation of the 15 citizens who tragically lost their lives in the canoe overturn incident.

Currently, the Indian Embassy and Consulate General are closely coordinating with relevant authorities to complete the procedures as soon as possible.
