Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung attends informal meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers with Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe

WVR - On July 12, in Bangkok, Thailand, an informal meeting took place between ASEAN Foreign Ministers and Myanmar's Foreign Minister under the chairmanship of Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Maria Theresa P. Lazaro, the ASEAN Chair for 2026. Member of the Politburo and Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the meeting.

This was the first in-person meeting attended by ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the highest-level direct contact between ASEAN and the Myanmar Government since 2021, reflecting ASEAN's spirit of solidarity and central role in promoting dialogue and cooperation with Myanmar.

The meeting was organized based on the directives of ASEAN Leaders at the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, to continue exploring ways for ASEAN to maintain support and cooperation with Myanmar, adhering to the principles of the Five-Point Consensus.

At the meeting, ASEAN Foreign Ministers acknowledged the information from Myanmar's Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe regarding recent developments in Myanmar, including the 100-day plan and specific measures to promote peace, reconciliation, and stability, as well as efforts to maintain exchanges and contacts with relevant parties in Myanmar.

In a frank and constructive spirit, the Ministers shared assessments of the situation and discussed specific measures to enhance coordination and support for Myanmar in the future through effective and substantive implementation of the Five-Point Consensus – ASEAN's main guiding framework in supporting Myanmar.

The Ministers affirmed that ASEAN will continue to maintain dialogue with Myanmar's government representatives and support Myanmar in seeking long-term solutions led and owned by Myanmar, aiming for peace, national reconciliation, stability, security, and the development and prosperity of the Myanmar people and the region.

Speaking at the meeting, Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung affirmed that Vietnam consistently regards Myanmar as a member of ASEAN and the Five-Point Consensus as an important framework for ASEAN to continue supporting Myanmar. The Foreign Minister acknowledged the measures implemented by the Myanmar Government recently to stabilize politics, recover the economy, and enhance governance efficiency, strengthen the fight against transnational crime, including drugs and cybercrime, and control border areas; and hoped that efforts for peace, national reconciliation, ensuring security, safety, and the lives of the people will continue to be promoted.

The Vietnamese Foreign Minister suggested that besides promoting substantive implementation of the Five-Point Consensus, ASEAN needs to take more specific and practical steps, prioritizing maintaining direct and regular contact and dialogue with Myanmar to update the situation and promote substantive progress.

The Foreign Minister affirmed that Vietnam is ready to closely coordinate with the ASEAN Chair for 2026 and member countries to support Myanmar in economic recovery, addressing social issues, combating transnational crime, promoting bilateral and sub-regional cooperation, for the peace, stability, and sustainable development of Myanmar and the region, and contributing to the ASEAN Community building process.

* On this occasion, Minister Le Hoai Trung also held bilateral meetings with Myanmar's Foreign Minister and the Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs to discuss cooperation topics of mutual interest.
