Goni enters East Sea, becoming 10th storm to hit Vietnam

Storm Goni, the tenth storm of the year, entered the East Sea on the morning of November 2 after sweeping down the Philippines, according to the National Centre of Hydro-meteorological and Forecasting (NCHF).

At around 4 a.m on November 2, the storm was located about 820 km southeast of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, with the strongest wind power of between 75-90kph gusting up to 11 category near its eye.

Over the next 24 to 48 hours, the storm will move mainly in the west direction at at speed of 15-20km per hour, about 310km from Quang Nam, about 240km from Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh, about 260km from Phu Yen. The strongest wind force close to its centre of between 75-90kph, packing winds of 12 category.

Over the next 48 to 72 hours, it is anticipated to travel west at a speed of about 10kph, move inland from Da Nang to Phu Yen and then weaken into a tropical depression, which will move in the southwest direction at the same speed.

As of November 2, the sea areas from Binh Thuan to Ca Mau, Ca Mau to Kien Giang, the Gulf of Thailand and southern East Sea, including the waters of Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago will be hit by scattered showers, thunderstorms and possible whirlwinds.

Meanwhile, post-storm recovery efforts continue to get underway in central Vietnam as Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had a meeting with local authorities of Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh provinces, and Da Nang city on November 1 in an effort to overcome consequences caused by Molave typhoon and carry out search and rescue operations.
