Ao Dai has long been a source of pride for Vietnamese women. However, when an Ao Dai tailoring technique is successfully systematized into a formula, published as a book, and recognized with a global record, it marks a special milestone in the Vietnamese Ao Dai tailoring craft.

At the recent seminar "Ao dai ly vuong – Vietnamese Identity, Contemporary Form", the Palestinian Ambassador to Vietnam, Saadi Salama, referred to Ao Dai as a “cultural passport” for Vietnam, capable of traveling the world to introduce the image of the Vietnamese people to international friends.

This metaphor moved many attendees. For Ao Dai is not merely an outfit. In every line and shape of the Ao Dai lies the identity, spirit, and cultural beauty that has accompanied Vietnamese women through generations.

Agreeing with this perspective, Dang Thi Bich Lien, former Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, affirmed: “Ao dai ly vuong is a way for Ao Dai to continue to exist in today’s life as a living heritage – with quality, depth, and nurtured by knowledge”.

From a tailoring formula that enhances the beauty of Vietnamese women, Ao dai ly vuong has become a “cultural passport”, bringing Ao Dai knowledge into academic spaces and opening career opportunities for tens of thousands of women.

The ly vuong technique has become an important foundation to address familiar issues in Ao Dai tailoring, from the armpit, neck, waist to the overall form. As a result, each design is not only visually appealing but also fits comfortably when worn.

Designer Do Trinh Hoai Nam did not keep this formula as a private secret but chose to systematize nearly 40 years of experience into the book Cong thuc Ao dai ly vuong, transforming professional knowledge into a teachable, learnable, and transmissible resource. One of the great values of Cong thuc Ao dai ly vuong is its ability to create real career opportunities.

From the perspective of supporting women’s entrepreneurship, Nguyen Huong Giang – Member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union proudly shared: “From cultural values, designer Do Trinh Hoai Nam has turned it into vocational skills. To date, more than 20,000 women have been trained, with over 10,000 confidently starting businesses, opening tailoring shops, and increasing their income”.

Nguyen Huong Giang emphasized that when a technique is standardized and clearly taught, it can become a “means of livelihood”, helping women confidently learn a trade, open workshops, start businesses, and take control of their lives. Thus, from a tailoring technique, Ao dai ly vuong has expanded into a journey of imparting skills, instilling confidence, and igniting the entrepreneurial spirit among Vietnamese women.

Educator Vu Chi Cong (former Acting Rector of the University of Industrial Fine Arts) commented that the book is an invaluable resource for many students: “This is not simply a technical guidebook, but a foundation for university students to reference and develop in applied arts and fashion design”.

The moment designer Do Trinh Hoai Nam held the global record certificate in his hands was the culmination of nearly 40 years of work, research, experimentation, and refinement of Ao Dai techniques.

For apprentices, this is an important curriculum to understand correctly, execute properly, and shorten the practical journey. For culture enthusiasts, it is a collectible publication, a prestigious gift for those who cherish Vietnamese Ao Dai.
