At the Ministry's press conference, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam Pham Thu Hang answered reporters’ questions on a number of issues concerning citizen protection.
Regarding the 8.5-magnitude earthquake in the Kamchatka region of the Russian Federation and tsunami warnings along the Pacific coasts of Japan, Hawaii, and parts of Alaska (USA), Spokesperson Hang stated that the Vietnamese communities in the affected areas are currently safe.
She noted immediately after receiving information about the earthquake and tsunami warnings from local authorities, the Vietnamese diplomatic missions in Russia, Japan, and the United States proactively contacted key members of the Vietnamese communities to assess the situation. They advised citizens to immediately move to safe areas, closely monitor news updates, and strictly follow the safety guidelines and measures issued by local governments.
Following the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vietnamese diplomatic missions in these countries continue to maintain emergency response mechanisms until tsunami warnings are lifted. They are closely monitoring developments and local safety measures, maintaining communication with Vietnamese community contacts, and promptly issuing safety advisories or providing assistance when necessary.
“The most important information for us at this time is that the Vietnamese communities in areas affected by the earthquake and under tsunami warnings remain safe,” the Spokesperson stressed.
Regarding the recent arrest of a Vietnamese national in Japan for allegedly violating local laws, Spokesperson Hang said the individual was detained on July 27 in Imari city, Saga prefecture, on charges of robbery, murder, and unlawful entry. Vietnam’s diplomatic missions in Japan promptly contacted local authorities to verify the case and implemented citizen protection measures in line with Vietnamese and Japanese laws.
The Consulate General in Fukuoka also sent letters of sympathy to the Saga Governor and condolences to the victim’s family, the spokesperson added.
Responding to questions about a video circulating on social media showing a group of foreign nationals resisted Vietnamese law enforcement over the deportation, the Spokesperson said the individuals involved were illegally residing in Vietnam and had violated local laws. She affirmed that the matter was handled in accordance with Vietnamese and international laws, and emphasised that as in other countries, foreigners in Vietnam must comply with local regulations.
"According to information from competent authorities, these individuals are foreign nationals who have been residing illegally in Vietnam and have violated Vietnamese law. Vietnamese law enforcement agencies have acted firmly and in accordance with both Vietnamese and international law.”
On this occasion, the Spokesperson reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of facilitating the entry, exit, and residence of foreigners for purposes such as study, work, investment, market exploration, and tourism, thereby contributing to the country’s socio-economic development and promoting people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and other countries. As in other countries, foreigners entering, exiting, and residing in Vietnam must fully comply with Vietnamese laws.
