Vietnam welcomes fourth representative honored in the Russian Academy of Sciences

WVR - In the recent foreign academician election in May, Prof. Chau Van Minh was one of four scientists elected in the Biology Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

Speaking at the honoring ceremony on November 25, Prof. Chau Van Minh expressed pride in receiving this prestigious title, both for himself and for the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).

Prof. Chau Van Minh receives the prestigious title from Prof. Gennedy Kraniskov, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Hero of Labor of Russia.

He is confident that cooperation between the two Academies will be further strengthened for the advancement of science and the Vietnam-Russia friendship.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Dang Minh Khoi emphasized that this is a particularly significant milestone for Vietnamese science, as RAS is one of the world's leading academies with a 300-year history, gathering many Nobel laureates and having a profound influence.

The election of a Vietnamese scientist to RAS reflects the Russian scientific community's recognition of Vietnam's research capabilities and highlights the rising status of Vietnamese science on the international stage.

The event also holds deep symbolic meaning for the bilateral relations, showcasing that scientific and technological cooperation, especially in key areas like marine science, high-energy physics, material technology, and bio-chemistry, is becoming a sustainable pillar of the Vietnam-Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

This is a positive signal, opening up many new cooperation opportunities as both countries prioritize the development of science, technology, and innovation.

Prof. Chau Van Minh noted that the 50-year cooperation journey between RAS and VAST demonstrates that the Vietnamese academic community has not only grown in scientific research but also in international collaboration.

From initially learning and adopting Russian knowledge and experience and implementing joint projects under their guidance, Vietnamese scientists, with increasingly well-trained knowledge and skills and more international exposure, are becoming more proactive in cooperation, proposing content, and setting directions for collaboration and activities.

For instance, in marine cooperation, Vietnamese scientists have acquired many new techniques, matured significantly, and formed joint research groups based on equal collaboration.

Recently, with strong support and investment from the Vietnamese Government in science and technology, from research infrastructure to training support, Vietnamese scientists have advanced in both expertise and collaborative reputation, earning high regard from Russian colleagues who actively seek partnerships for joint projects.

This year, Vietnam and Russia celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations with numerous positive activities. According to the Joint Declaration on the major directions of the Vietnam-Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the new cooperation phase agreed upon by General Secretary To Lam and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the visit to Russia last May, 2026 is designated as the year of Vietnam-Russia science, technology, and innovation cooperation, an initiative to enhance bilateral cooperation in science and technology.

In this direction, VAST will intensify collaboration with Russian partners in areas of strength such as basic research, especially in fields where Russia leads like physics, chemistry, and earth sciences; focus on mastering core and strategic technologies, following Vietnam's orientation; and promote the application of science to address national socio-economic issues.

Additionally, VAST will continue to strengthen marine research cooperation and assess the national marine potential to develop strategic directions for sustainable marine exploitation and conservation, contributing to affirming national maritime sovereignty.

Prof. Chau Van Minh stated that the two Academies plan to sign a marine cooperation agreement for the 2026-2035 period in Hanoi and continue to implement the successful cooperation activities of recent times.

Prof. Chau Van Minh is a leading expert in the field of biochemistry of natural compounds, with nearly 500 scientific works and over 40 patents and utility solutions. Notably, he has made significant contributions to the development of Vietnam-Russia scientific cooperation, especially in basic research and human resource training.

He has also promoted the development and implementation of marine cooperation roadmaps between the two Academies, directed the organization of joint surveys using Russian scientific research vessels named "Academician Oparin" and "Academician Lavrentiev"; cooperated in research and human resource training in nuclear physics at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna; and developed interdisciplinary research programs on new materials, pharmaceutical-biotechnology, nuclear physics, space technology, and more with many Russian research institutes and universities.

Based on his positive contributions to promoting high-quality scientific and technological research and training cooperation between the two countries, the Union of Russian Educational and Scientific Organizations has entrusted Prof. Chau Van Minh as the "Ambassador of Russian Education and Science".

In the context of the country's push for innovation, international integration plays a crucial role in Vietnam's access to new knowledge and human resource development, thereby contributing to the goal of making science and technology a driving force for national development.

The election of the VAST President as an Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences is not only a well-deserved recognition for an outstanding scientist but also a shared pride of the Vietnamese scientific community.

This is clear evidence of the growing development and deeper integration of Vietnamese science, while also opening new opportunities for enhancing research and training cooperation between the two countries in the coming period.

With this event, the Vietnamese scientific community is honored to have a fourth representative recognized in the Russian Academy of Sciences, alongside Prof. Tran Dai Nghia, Prof. Nguyen Van Hieu, and Prof. Dang Vu Minh.

Additionally, Prof. Chau Van Minh has also become an Academician of three international academic organizations, including the Russian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS).
