During her working visit to Malta from September 9-10, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang met with Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Malta Ian Borg and worked with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Malta Christopher Cutajar.

On the morning of September 10, at the meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang congratulated Malta on its significant achievements in recent times and thanked Malta for its consistent support for Vietnam in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks, especially within the EU.

Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed the importance of relations with Malta and expressed the desire to expand and strengthen cooperation through exchanges at various levels and channels; further enhancing the connecting role of the two countries' Foreign Ministries and welcomed the organization of political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Vietnam and Malta.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta emphasized his continuous interest in promoting relations with Vietnam, appreciating Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang's visit, the first by a Vietnamese government representative to Malta.

Ian Borg highlighted Malta's commitment to advancing relations with Vietnam within both bilateral and EU cooperation frameworks, supporting the early upgrade of Vietnam-EU relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership; willing to be Vietnam's gateway to the EU, while hoping for Vietnam's support for Malta in its relations with ASEAN.

Both sides discussed specific measures to promote comprehensive cooperation, especially in economics, trade, education, training, science and technology, and maritime cooperation. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta agreed with Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang's proposal to support Vietnam in enhancing product quality to meet EU standards; lobbying the European Council to lift the IUU yellow card; and strengthening maritime cooperation, including crew training, marine and ocean research, maritime law, etc.

Both parties agreed to expand cooperation in areas where Malta has strengths and Vietnam has needs, such as science and technology, medical tourism, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals, as well as enhance cultural and artistic exchanges, and people-to-people interactions to foster understanding and connections between the peoples of the two countries.

Discussing regional and international issues of mutual concern, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta affirmed the role of international law, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982), in resolving issues related to the Sea and Oceans, supporting ASEAN's stance on the South China Sea.

Earlier on September 9, during a working session with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Christopher Cutajar, attended by Director General of the Malta Chamber of Commerce Anton Buttigieg, both sides reviewed the cooperation status between the two countries and agreed to effectively implement bilateral and multilateral commitments and agreements, as well as promote the signing of documents to create a legal framework for long-term cooperation between the two countries.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism expressed admiration for Vietnam's socio-economic achievements and dynamic development, as well as its multilateral and diversified foreign policy, being a friend to all countries; thanking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for arranging the visit to Vietnam in December 2024.

Both sides agreed to deepen Vietnam-Malta economic cooperation, facilitating businesses from both countries to explore each other's markets, promoting trade and investment activities such as organizing seminars, economic forums, and Vietnam-Malta business forums...

Both parties agreed to continue effectively exploiting the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), promoting EU countries to soon ratify the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), thereby enhancing investment attraction between Vietnam and the EU in general and with Malta in particular.

As a country with strengths in maritime economy and shipping, Malta affirmed its readiness to enhance cooperation with Vietnam in training sailors and crew members to international standards, developing tourism, and promoting the signing of maritime cooperation agreements...

Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang thanked the Maltese Government for facilitating the Vietnamese community in Malta and requested continued support for Vietnamese people in Malta to live, work stably, and integrate with the local society.

On this occasion, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang also visited the operational model of the Maritime MT training center.

Recognizing Malta's proposal to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in maritime training and attracting Vietnamese students to participate in training at the center, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang appreciated the effectiveness of the teaching program at Maritime MT and affirmed the promotion of cooperative connections with Vietnamese universities, centers, and maritime research institutes.
