Vietnam - ASEAN - United States: Opportunities to expand development space
WVR - Celebrating its 59th anniversary (8/8/1967 - 8/8/2026), ASEAN steps into its 60th year. This is an occasion to reflect on the proud development journey of a regional organization that has significantly contributed to peace, cooperation, and development in Southeast Asia. For Vietnam, ASEAN has always been a close cooperative space, a crucial component in its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateral, and diversified relations.

More than three decades since joining ASEAN, Vietnam has accompanied member countries, actively participating in the Community-building process while benefiting from the practical outcomes of regional integration. Along with ASEAN's development, Vietnam's international stature, economic connectivity, and development space have been increasingly expanded.
Vietnam's accession to ASEAN in 1995 marked the beginning of a new phase in regional and international integration. From a new member, Vietnam has gradually become a proactive, active, and responsible member, contributing to strengthening solidarity, maintaining cooperation, and promoting practical initiatives within ASEAN.
ASEAN has facilitated Vietnam's enhanced connectivity with neighbouring countries and major partners; expanded markets, attracted investment, and developed trade, tourism, education, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges. More importantly, ASEAN has provided Vietnam with conditions to engage more deeply in regional linkages, access new standards, and enhance integration capacity.
In an international context full of fluctuations, ASEAN's value is increasingly evident in its ability to maintain dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect. ASEAN provides a space for member countries and partners to exchange, build trust, and seek mutually beneficial areas of cooperation.
The accession of Timor-Leste as the 11th member of ASEAN in October 2025 marks a significant milestone. This event reflects ASEAN's appeal and inclusive spirit, while also opening a new phase for the Community in enhancing cohesion, mutual support, and sharing development opportunities.
The ASEAN-U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established in 2022, is experiencing positive developments, reflecting shared interests in promoting sustainable development, economic connectivity, and innovation. The United States is a leading partner of ASEAN in trade, investment, education, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges.
U.S. businesses, research institutes, universities, and localities are increasingly interested in ASEAN and its member countries. U.S. partners highly appreciate the region's potential due to its dynamic market, young workforce, increasing production capacity, and commitment to innovation-driven development. Promising areas of cooperation include digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, clean energy, logistics, biotechnology, modern agriculture, healthcare, education, and skills training. These sectors meet the development needs of ASEAN countries and align with the U.S.'s strengths in technology, capital, management, and research.

To turn these opportunities into concrete results, ASEAN needs to continue improving the investment environment, enhancing intra-regional connectivity, developing infrastructure, improving the quality of human resources, and creating conditions for regional businesses to participate more deeply in supply chains. Effective cooperation is not only about attracting external resources but also about enhancing the capacity to receive, transform, and disseminate these resources within each country's economy.
With increasingly developed relations with both ASEAN and the United States, Vietnam is well-positioned to contribute to fostering practical connections between the two sides. This is not a role of substitution or representation for anyone but a natural contribution of an active ASEAN member and a trusted partner of the United States.
Vietnam can promote specific cooperative projects between businesses, localities, universities, and research agencies of the United States with Vietnam and other ASEAN countries. Projects on high-quality human resource training, digital transformation, supply chain development, and support for small and medium enterprises can bring direct, long-term benefits to all parties.
In this process, the practical benefits for people and businesses are both the foundation and the most sustainable motivation to realize ASEAN's programs, goals, and expectations. Each cooperative initiative should aim at specific values: better jobs, higher technological capacity, better quality products, improved competitiveness, and a more sustainable development environment. Only then can ASEAN confidently advance and continue to develop as the world's only and most successful regional organization.
In the near future, ASEAN will continue to be one of the important platforms for Vietnam to integrate, develop, and enhance its position. The ASEAN-U.S. relationship, if nurtured in the spirit of equal cooperation, mutual benefit, and mutual respect, will contribute to expanding the development space for the entire region.
Celebrating ASEAN's Founding Day is an occasion to reaffirm the belief in the value of cooperation, connectivity, and shared opportunities. The Vietnamese Embassy will continue to accompany the embassies of ASEAN countries through the activities of the ASEAN Committee in Washington DC (ACW), promoting substantive relations with the United States and other partners in the area, thereby contributing to building a peaceful, stable, dynamic, and prosperous Southeast Asia.
