Indian Embassy: Prayers and support from Vietnam provide strength in times of grief

WVR - On July 13, the bodies of 15 Indian tourists who lost their lives in a boat capsizing off the coast of Phu Quoc Island were repatriated to India. On this occasion, the Indian Embassy in Vietnam expressed its gratitude to the Vietnamese authorities and people for their support in the aftermath of the accident.

In an article titled “'Your prayers, efforts gave us strength': Indian Embassy thanks Vietnam as bodies of boat tragedy victims return home” published on July 13, Times of India cited a social media post from the Indian Embassy in Vietnam stating that the victims' bodies were transported from Ho Chi Minh City to Mumbai on Vietnam Airlines flight VN979.

The Embassy also informed that the authorities of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu would coordinate to receive and transport the victims' bodies to their localities for burial. They extended their thanks to Vietnamese authorities for their active support following the accident.

“The Indian Embassy in Hanoi and the Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City express sincere gratitude to the authorities of Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, An Giang Province, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, and all related agencies for their utmost support after the tragic accident,” the agency posted.

Notably, the Embassy expressed appreciation for the condolences and encouragement from the Vietnamese people: “We are deeply grateful for the condolences and prayers from our Vietnamese friends. Your prayers, efforts, and presence have given us strength during this extremely sorrowful time.”

Around 1 PM on July 11, a particularly serious waterway traffic accident occurred approximately 200 meters from Hon May Rut, An Thoi (Phu Quoc Special Zone, An Giang Province). The passenger boat with registration number AG-26751, carrying 32 Indian tourists and 3 crew members (including one operator, one mechanic, and one staff member), capsized on its journey from Hon May Rut to An Thoi port. By 3 PM on July 11, the accident had resulted in 15 fatalities.

Immediately upon receiving information about the incident, Vietnamese authorities promptly coordinated with the Indian Embassy in Hanoi and the Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City to implement protective measures.

On the evening of July 12, the bodies of the 15 victims were transported from Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh City and preserved at the City Forensic Centre. A task force from the Department of Foreign Affairs was present to assist with procedures.

On the afternoon of July 13, with coordination from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Foreign Affairs, Vietnamese authorities, along with the Indian Embassy and Consulate General, completed the handover procedures, allowing the victims' bodies to be placed on a flight at 6 PM back to India, as per the families' wishes.
