Homeland Spring 2026: Connecting the Vietnamese community in the US with the motherland

WVR - On February 5 (local time), on the occasion of the Lunar New Year the Horse (Binh Ngo) the Vietnamese Embassy in the US solemnly organized the Homeland Spring 2026 program with enthusiastic participation of the Vietnamese community, international friends, and representatives from local agencies.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung extended New Year greetings to the entire Vietnamese community and distinguished guests, emphasizing: “Tet is a sacred moment for every Vietnamese, wherever they are, to look towards their homeland, family, and national roots.”

Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung highlighted Vietnam's remarkable achievements in 2025, including economic growth, social welfare assurance, the implementation of the “Quang Trung Campaign” supporting over 36,000 households affected by natural disasters, and the success of the 14th Congress with strategic goals set for 2030 and a vision for 2045.

The Ambassador affirmed the consistent policy of the Party and State in considering the overseas Vietnamese community as an inseparable part and a vital resource of the national unity bloc, an “indispensable” component in the nation's era of reaching out.

Nguyen Quoc Dung highly appreciated the increasingly diverse contributions of the Vietnamese community in the US across fields such as science and technology, education, healthcare, business, arts, and social life, viewing this as a valuable resource for national development and strengthening Vietnam-U.S. relations. He also expressed confidence that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the US will continue to develop positively and sustainably, based on mutual respect and shared interests.

The event contributed to strengthening the connection between the diaspora and the homeland, while also serving as an occasion to promote Vietnamese culture, tighten friendship, understanding, and trust between the peoples of Vietnam and the US as both countries aim for new development goals in an era of extensive cooperation.

Attending the ceremony, a representative of the Vietnamese community in the US, Mr. Norman N. Van Toai, expressed sincere gratitude to the Embassy for its continuous support and companionship with the community, especially in maintaining the annual Tet gatherings.

He emphasized the profound significance of Spring celebration activities in preserving cultural identity, connecting the community, and evoking the homeland spirit and traditional memories of overseas Vietnamese. He affirmed that the Tet gatherings organized by the Embassy are a valuable spiritual encouragement, providing the Vietnamese community with a meaningful reunion filled with homeland affection.

The event also featured a Tet culinary space with traditional dishes representing the three regions, such as spring rolls, banh tet, banh it, banh beo, and gio cha, helping international friends and younger generations born and raised in the US to better understand Vietnamese customs and traditions.

Many expatriates shared their emotions when celebrating the community Tet with family, meeting, exchanging, speaking Vietnamese, and together looking towards the homeland at the dawn of the Spring.

The highlight of the program was the cultural performances, including piano, singing, and traditional costume shows by children, students, expatriates, and Embassy staff, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere that connected generations.

Continuing the beautiful cultural traditions of the nation, the Ambassador and his spouse gave New Year’s lucky money to the children, wishing them to be diligent, excel in their studies, and preserve the Vietnamese language and cultural identity.

In a space beautifully decorated with peach blossoms, apricot blossoms, and red couplets, the Vietnamese diaspora and international friends enjoyed cultural performances and explored the beauty of the traditional Vietnamese Tet.

Many delegates and guests wore traditional ao dai, creating a warm, familial atmosphere rich in national cultural identity right in the heart of Washington DC. Attendees praised Vietnam's recent development achievements and expressed their desire to continue cooperating and accompanying Vietnam and the Vietnamese community in the US on the upcoming journey.
