At the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, Founder Chairman of the Board of Peace on Gaza, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee To Lam will visit the United States to attend the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace on Gaza from February 18 - 20, 2026.
On this occasion, Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Nguyen Quoc Dung gave an interview about the key objectives and main messages that General Secretary To Lam will bring to the U.S. during this visit. Below is the content of the interview:
Could you please share the key objectives and main messages that General Secretary To Lam will bring to the U.S. during this visit?
At the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, General Secretary To Lam will lead the Vietnamese delegation to attend the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington DC on February 19, 2026, as a founding member.
The General Secretary, along with other members, will discuss and identify the tasks the Board of Peace will undertake to implement the peace plan for the Gaza region according to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2830.
The participation of Vietnam's top leader signifies Vietnam's support and readiness to engage in joint international efforts for peace and development. This also concretizes the cooperation agreement on international issues within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the United States.
From a foreign affairs perspective, could you elaborate on the significance of Vietnam becoming a founding member of the Peace Council?
Vietnam is a country that has experienced many devastating wars, thus deeply understands the value of peace, reconciliation, and post-conflict reconstruction. The 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam affirmed that Vietnam will "actively and responsibly participate in addressing common international and regional issues".
Vietnam's role as a founding member of the Board of Peace reflects this spirit and consistently implements the Party's foreign policy, striving to enhance the country's prestige and image.
Moreover, it is an opportunity for Vietnam to leverage its experience and capabilities, and a chance to learn and integrate with other countries while coordinating on common missions.
Could you specify how Vietnam plans to contribute within the framework of the Board of Peace?
As a founding member, Vietnam aims to collaborate with other members to enhance the Board's role in promoting peace and rebuilding Gaza based on the UN Security Council's Resolution, ensuring the legitimate interests of all parties, especially the Palestinian people, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.
While Vietnam is not a wealthy nation, we have practical experience in overcoming the aftermath of war. Vietnam is ready to contribute human and material resources within its capacity to reconstruction efforts, socio-economic recovery, and supporting the stabilization of life for the people of Gaza.
How will this visit further motivate Vietnam-U.S. relations in the future?
This visit, within the framework of multilateral activities, also holds significant importance for bilateral Vietnam-U.S. relations. U.S. President Donald Trump personally invited General Secretary To Lam to join the Board of Peace as a founding member and to attend this inaugural meeting.
The General Secretary's participation is a show of support for peace efforts in general and the Gaza reconstruction initiative in particular, contributing to deepening cooperation between the two countries in addressing regional and global issues, in line with the spirit of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Therefore, I believe this visit will continue to strengthen political trust, expand substantive cooperation, and further motivate Vietnam-U.S. relations in the future.
Thank you very much, Ambassador!
