VNUIS English Challenge 2026: The gateway to global integration for the digital citizen generation

In the era of artificial intelligence (AI), English is becoming the key to accessing knowledge, mastering technology, and integrating internationally. With the theme “AI and the Future of Education”, VNUIS English Challenge 2026 aims to create an academic playground where students can hone critical thinking, academic skills, and adaptability to the digital age.

English – The key to unlocking global integration

The rapid development of AI is transforming how people learn, work, and access knowledge. In this context, education is no longer just about imparting knowledge but increasingly focuses on developing thinking skills, creativity, and lifelong learning capabilities. English thus continues to serve as a bridge, helping learners access sources of knowledge, technology, and opportunities for global cooperation.

Currently, most research works, scientific documents, online courses, and many AI platforms use English as the primary language. Foreign language proficiency not only facilitates more effective communication but also enables learners to quickly access new technological trends and global knowledge.

In Vietnam, enhancing English proficiency for the younger generation is becoming a crucial requirement to meet the demands of international integration and digital transformation. The project “Making English the Second Language in Schools for the Period 2025-2035, with a Vision to 2045” approved by the Prime Minister aims to improve the quality of English teaching and learning while building a workforce capable of working in an international environment.

In response to the spirit of the project, the International School - Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-IS), in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of English Language Teaching and Research (VietTESOL) and Havina Global, is organising the VNUIS English Challenge 2026 for high school and university students nationwide. The competition is designed to serve as an academic forum for young people to use English to exchange, debate, and express views on issues shaping the future of education and society.

The theme “AI and the Future of Education” reflects issues of interest to many educational systems, including the application of AI in teaching and learning, the ethics of AI use, the future of schools, and the role of technology in language learning. The competition thus encourages young people to think and express their views on changes that will directly impact their learning and career paths.

Building resilience in the AI era

The distinctive feature of VNUIS English Challenge 2026 is that it does not focus on testing vocabulary or grammar memorisation but encourages learners to use English as a tool for research, analysis, and presenting viewpoints. During participation, contestants must seek information, process data, construct arguments, and defend ideas before a panel of judges – skills increasingly valued in international learning and working environments.

The integration of AI into the evaluation of submissions, along with the participation of a specialised panel of judges, also demonstrates the trend of applying technology to organise academic competitions while ensuring the human role in assessing contestants' thinking, reasoning, and presentation skills.

The message the competition aims to convey aligns with the requirements of modern education: AI can assist humans in processing information, but cannot replace independent thinking, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. These are the core competencies for the younger generation to adapt to future learning and working environments.

When education, technology, and integration converge

In the context where education is increasingly tied to the demands of integration and digital transformation, educational institutions not only focus on improving teaching quality but also aim to build learning environments connected with businesses, academic organisations, and international educational standards. Academic playgrounds thus become part of the training process, helping learners transform knowledge into practical skills and competencies.

VNUIS English Challenge 2026 is built with this orientation. Besides being hosted by the International School - Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-IS), the competition is accompanied by the Vietnam Association of English Language Teaching and Research (VietTESOL), Havina Global, and partners in testing, training, and international education. The participation of specialised units enhances academic quality while providing students with opportunities to access international-standard learning and assessment methods.

A noteworthy point is that the competition not only targets contestants but also creates value for the educational community. According to the Organising Committee, schools with a high number of participating students will have the opportunity to receive support to participate in teacher training programs on teaching subjects in English (EMI) and on applying AI in lesson design. Through this, the competition hopes to spread modern teaching methods, encouraging the use of English in learning, research, and academic exchange.

Spreading opportunities for learning and integration

An academic competition truly matters only when it offers many young people opportunities to challenge themselves and grow. With the VNUIS English Challenge 2026, the Organising Committee hopes the competition will receive the support of the Departments of Education and Training, the Departments of Foreign Affairs, and educational institutions, including high schools, universities, colleges, and other educational institutions, in spreading information and encouraging students nationwide to participate.

In the context of digital technology narrowing geographical distances, it is important not only to expand access to knowledge but also to create more environments for learners to develop skills, resilience, and integration thinking. Each essay, each presentation, or each idea presented is the result of self-study, self-research, and the effort to overcome one's limits. Whether winning or not, that journey provides valuable experiences for the learner's growth.

In a world rapidly changing due to AI, English increasingly becomes a foundational skill for accessing knowledge, international connectivity, and expanding career opportunities. VNUIS English Challenge 2026 is thus not just a public speaking competition but an opportunity for young people to hone critical thinking, adaptability, and integration resilience – essential tools for global citizens in the digital era.
