Vietnam is one of the eight representatives invited to attend this G7 Expanded Summit. Could you please share your assessments about this as well as Vietnam’s participation?
The United States and Vietnam are already engaging on a wide range of strategic issues, including regional peace and stability, climate change, and sustainable development, and we look forward to further cooperation in multilateral fora on economic linkages, climate change, and promoting peace and stability in the region and the world.
The participation of Vietnamese leadership in the expanded G7 Summit further exhibits Vietnam’s significant role in the international community and shows G7 countries’ trust and appreciation for Vietnam’s position in the international arena. It is also important as Vietnam is one of only four Just Energy Transition Partnership (JET-P) country partners. JET-P is a G7 initiative, and it is great to have such a meaningful and important element of cooperation to discuss in Hiroshima, among other topics.
What are your comments about Vietnam’s role and contribution to globally-shared goals such as promoting peace, stability, responding to climate change?
The United States supports Vietnam’s role as a major player in regional and global efforts to promote peace and stability and respond to the effects of climate change. Together, our two nations have had consistent and strong engagement on regional security and stability. Our shared aspiration to a free and open Indo-Pacific has included standing up training facilities for fishery surveillance, agreements on the transfer of Coast Guard cutters to improve maritime security and law enforcement capabilities, and working together in the Mekong to protect the environment and sustainably manage water and other natural resources.
One of the significant indicators of Vietnam’s development and integration is the increasing leadership role that it is playing not just regionally, but globally. Vietnam served not only once, but twice on the UN Security Council. Vietnam was the ASEAN Chair in 2020 and hosted APEC in 2017. In three major regional and global opportunities to showcase its leadership, it succeeded by every expectation.
Vietnam has deployed peacekeepers to the Central African Republic and South Sudan. Vietnam also recently sent two Search and Rescue (SAR) teams to support earthquake rescue operations in Türkiye. These SAR teams and donations showed Vietnam as a responsible partner in the international community standing shoulder-to-shoulder with countries in need. The United States is proud to partner with Vietnam on disaster management training, including SAR, through the Oregon National Guard State Partnership Program, which celebrates its 10-year anniversary this year.
We see Vietnamese diplomats very active around the world and in international organizations. By virtually every measure, Vietnam has been a very strong and capable partner that has been actively contributing to promoting peace and stability and responding to climate change regionally and globally.
The United States is proud to have been Vietnam’s partner in its development path. Our mission at the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi and Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City is to support the development of a strong, prosperous, independent, and resilient Vietnam that contributes to regional and global peace and stability. We stand by Vietnam as it moves forward to a greener economy and deals with the impacts of climate change, as Vietnam is one of the nations most affected. Our futures are linked. Vietnam’s success is our success.

Vietnam, US develop dynamic, effective ties: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken |
How do you evaluate Vietnam’s international economic integration efforts? What is your expectation about Vietnam’s growth in the coming time?
In May 2022, Vietnam became one of 12 initial countries dicussing in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF). Together, the IPEF partner countries are engaging on a wide range of issues, including clean energy transition, resilient supply chains, and anti-corruption. The United States and our partners are working closely with Vietnam as we develop our shared vision of the IPEF, which will advance our economies’ competitiveness and contribute to cooperation, peace, stability, prosperity, and the sustainable development of the region.
In the years ahead, I see tremendous opportunities for us to deepen and expand collaboration between the United States, the Government of Vietnam, and our respective private sectors to support our mutual goals in Vietnam:rebuilding global supply chains; accelerating Vietnam’s clean energy transition and sustainable growth; and developing the digital economy in line with global best practices to support its economic development.
Vietnam’s continued successful international economic integration, through initiatives like IPEF, trade promotion, participation in international organizations, and bilateral cooperation through innovative programs, will continue to attract foreign investment. I am proud of the investments that large U.S. companies have made here in Vietnam, and their integration with small - and medium - sized Vietnamese businesses. The domestic supply chain becomes international through these ties, and that to me is a real sign of economic success – linkages, supply chain resiliency, and global cooperation.
