Discussion commemorating United Nations Vesak Day 2026: Promoting Buddhist values for global peace and cooperation

On April 30, at the United Nations geadquarters in New York, a discussion commemorating the United Nations Vesak Day was held with the theme “Promoting Buddhist values for global peace and cooperation”.

The event was organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, with the participation of numerous representatives from member countries and international scholars.

The delegates emphasized the significance of Vesak – the day commemorating three major events in the life of the Buddha (Birth, Enlightenment, and Passing Away) – as an occasion to honor the universal values of Buddhism.

The speeches highlighted the role of the Buddhist heritage as a “bridge of civilization”, contributing to promoting dialogue, enhancing understanding, and connecting nations in a joint effort to address global challenges.

Initiatives on heritage preservation, connecting pilgrimage sites, academic exchanges, and cultural cooperation are seen as effective channels to enhance people-to-people exchanges and strengthen the foundation for sustainable peace.

Speaking at the Discussion, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, affirmed that the Buddhist heritage not only holds spiritual value but also offers practical approaches for the conduct of nations, especially in a world still facing conflict, division, and declining trust.

The Ambassador emphasized that the core values of Buddhism, such as peace, compassion, and interdependence, continue to spread enduring vitality, contributing to promoting cooperation, reducing confrontation, and placing humanity at the center of all actions.

Ambassador Do Hung Viet shared that Buddhism has accompanied and deeply intertwined with the history of nation-building and defense in Vietnam, becoming a profound part of the cultural and spiritual life of the nation, contributing to strengthening solidarity and promoting inclusive development.

On this occasion, the Ambassador recalled Vietnam's successful hosting of the United Nations Vesak Day 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City, gathering a large number of international monks and Buddhists. During this event, the ceremonial reception of the Buddha's relics from India to Vietnam became a vivid symbol of cultural exchange, friendship, and connection among nations.
