Vietnam holds consultations on the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in Switzerland

WVR - From March 9 – 10, in Geneva (Switzerland), Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN) in New York, in his capacity as the designated President of the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), presided over consultations with regional groups and member states at UN agencies in Geneva.

During the mission, Ambassador Do Hung Viet chaired consultations with NPT member states from the Non-Aligned Movement, Eastern European Group, and Western European Group, as well as bilateral consultations with China, Russia, the UK, France, and the US.

The Ambassador also presided over and spoke at an event organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and the European Union (EU) on preparations for the NPT Review Conference. Attending these activities was Ambassador Mai Phan Dũng, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, World Trade Organization (WTO), and other international organizations in Geneva.

During the meetings, representatives of countries and international organizations welcomed Vietnam's role as President of the 2026 NPT Review Conference, especially amid the complex international security environment.

Many countries urged Vietnam, as the Conference President, to approach issues in a balanced, constructive, and realistic manner; they also affirmed their continued close cooperation with the President to achieve substantive outcomes at the Conference. Member states reaffirmed the value of the Treaty and the NPT review process in maintaining international peace and security and promoting sustainable development.

The consultations focused on discussing key issues for the Conference, particularly in the field of nuclear disarmament. Amid ongoing conflicts and rising tensions in many regions, many countries emphasized the urgency for the Review Conference to achieve concrete results, thereby affirming the strong commitment of member states to the NPT and the global disarmament and non-proliferation regime. They highlighted the importance of upholding international law, promoting peaceful dispute resolution, and preventing arms races and the threat of nuclear war.

Speaking at the consultations, Ambassador Do Hung Viet emphasized Vietnam's strong commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities as President of the NPT Review Conference, ensuring that the consultation and discussion process is fair, open, inclusive, transparent, and effective.

The Ambassador called on countries and the international community to make maximum efforts to find common ground and maintain dialogue, even on deeply divisive issues, aiming for substantive results that contribute to strengthening trust and commitment to the NPT in the current context.

Many countries also expressed deep concerns about the impact of ongoing conflicts and current hotspots on the NPT review process, particularly the situation in the Middle East. However, they emphasized that the NPT remains the only effective nuclear arms control mechanism with the participation of all permanent members of the UN Security Council; therefore, all countries must make maximum efforts to ensure the Conference achieves substantive outcomes.
