This is the first time the Vietnamese Language Day has been organized in Ekaterinburg. The event aims to honor and promote the study and research of the Vietnamese language, preserving the cultural identity of the Vietnamese community in the Russian Federation in general and Sverdlovsk province in particular; at the same time, it serves as a bridge to strengthen the friendship and enhance cooperation between the people of Vietnam and the Russian Federation.

Speaking at the event, Consul General of Vietnam in Ekaterinburg Nguyen Mai Huong emphasized that language is the soul of culture, a repository of history, traditions, and identity of each nation. For generations, Vietnamese people have always had a special affection for the Russian language and culture.

The teaching and promotion of each other's languages is a common direction that the leaders of both countries are particularly concerned about. Currently, major Russian universities in Moscow, Kazan, Saint Petersburg, and Vladivostok have Vietnamese language departments. Many Russian students are studying Vietnamese in Vietnam.

Recently, with the coordination of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Ekaterinburg during meetings with Ural Federal University, the university established a Vietnamese language department under the Faculty of Oriental Studies. Vietnamese is taught to both undergraduate and master's students. This provides a good opportunity for more young Russians to learn Vietnamese in the future to better understand Vietnamese culture and history.

Mr. Ilya Markov, Minister of Culture of Sverdlovsk province, remarked that language is the gateway to understanding the culture of each country, expressing a desire for both sides to continue to promote cultural exchanges and welcoming the younger generations of both countries to learn each other's languages, as culture is a bridge between the two nations.

He fondly remembers the wonderful memories of the Vietnamese water puppet troupe that once performed in Sverdlovsk, and noted that in September, Ekaterinburg will host the International Youth Forum. The city government hopes to welcome many young Vietnamese participants to strengthen cultural exchanges and youth interactions.

Mr. Oleg Alexandrin, Deputy Minister of International Relations and External Economic Affairs of Sverdlovsk province, stated that a delegation from the province, led by him, visited Vietnam in early April 2026, opening up many opportunities for cooperation.

Additionally, during the visit of the Vietnamese Prime Minister to Russia at the end of March 2026, the two countries signed a cooperation agreement in the field of nuclear power and many new cooperation documents. From an economic cooperation perspective, it is crucial for Russian and Vietnamese people to learn each other's languages in the current context of promising trade promotion between the two countries.

In reality, there is currently a shortage of interpreters for delegations and businesses from both sides. Therefore, he highly appreciates the significance of the Vietnamese Language Day and hopes it will serve as a foundation for similar activities to be popularized in Ekaterinburg in the future.

The Vietnamese Language Day featured very special activities. Participants enjoyed performances by children of the community and Vietnamese students.

International guests practiced speaking Vietnamese and became acquainted with the unique aspects of the Vietnamese language. Russian students studying Vietnamese confidently introduced Vietnamese customs and symbols such as bamboo, rice, lotus flowers, and traditional ao dai dresses.

The Vietnamese Language Day concluded successfully, leaving a profound impact, spreading the love for the mother tongue and national pride within the Vietnamese community in Ekaterinburg. This activity is part of the project "Vietnamese Language Honouring Day in the Vietnamese Community Abroad for the period 2023-2030", not only aiming to preserve the Vietnamese language among Vietnamese overseas generations but also to promote cultural exchanges and spread the Vietnamese language to international friends.
