Attendees included Mr. Hugo Guzmán Rambaldi, Director of the weekly El Siglo, the press agency of the Communist Party of Chile, continuously published since 1940; Mr. Javier Pineda Olcay, Director of the electronic newspaper El Ciudadano – a lawyer and human rights activist, currently hosting a morning news program on Canal Ciudadano. El Ciudadano has approximately 4.7 million followers on Facebook. Mr. Andrés Almeida Farga, Editor-in-Chief of the investigative journalism site Interferencia, winner of the 2018 Ibero-American Economic Journalism Award, was also present.
During the meeting, Ambassador Nguyen Viet Cuong reviewed the historical milestones in the 55-year journey of bilateral relations. Originating from the historic meeting between President Ho Chi Minh and Chilean Senate President Salvador Allende in Hanoi (May 1969), the two countries officially established diplomatic relations in 1971.
Over various phases, Vietnam-Chile relations have continuously developed, upgraded to a Comprehensive Partnership in 2007, and the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2011. The Ambassador emphasized that economic cooperation is a standout highlight, with bilateral trade in 2024 reaching nearly USD 1.8 billion. Notably, the official visit to Chile by President Luong Cuong in November 2024 and the signing of several important documents have created new momentum for the relationship between the two countries in the coming period.

Regarding development orientation, Ambassador Nguyen Viet Cuong highlighted the importance of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (January 2026). After 40 years of Renewal, Vietnam remains committed to an independent, self-reliant, and multilateral foreign policy, while aiming for growth based on science-technology and a green economy.
In this context, the potential for cooperation between Vietnam and Chile remains vast due to the high complementarity of the two economies. Chile has strengths in minerals and renewable energy, while Vietnam excels in industrial and electronic production.
To enhance people-to-people exchanges, the Embassy also introduced the "Chile-Vietnam" painting contest with nearly 30 entries. The award ceremony is expected to be held in March, contributing to strengthening friendship and mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries.
At the meeting, Chilean journalists expressed particular interest in Vietnam's Renewal process and socio-economic development model. Additionally, representatives of media agencies expressed a desire to increase coverage on topics such as tourism, cuisine, and daily life, which are currently modestly represented in local media.
Acknowledging these suggestions, Ambassador Nguyen Viet Cuong affirmed that the Embassy will continue to promote engagement activities and expand information exchange channels with various Chilean press agencies. This effort aims to bring the image of a modern, dynamic, and culturally rich Vietnam closer to the Chilean public.
