Vietnamese Embassy in Australia celebrates 20 years of Vietnam-Nauru diplomatic relations

WVR - On May 27, at the Vietnam House, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam hosted Nauru's High Commissioner to Australia, Camilla Solomon, and leaders of several representative missions from South Pacific island nations, in anticipation of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Nauru (June 21, 2006 - June 21, 2026).

Nauru High Commissioner Camilla Solomon remarked that 20 years is not a long time in the historical context of the two nations, yet both sides have established a solid foundation of friendship and a reliable partnership.

Despite complex geopolitical developments regionally and globally, the relationship between Vietnam and Nauru has been continuously nurtured, reflecting mutual respect, support, and beneficial cooperation at the United Nations and other multilateral forums.

She emphasized that Nauru, a nation rich in marine resources, always views Vietnam as a development model and a potential partner in supplying essential goods for public life, cooperating in tuna fishing, and developing Nauru's infrastructure.

For his part, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam expressed appreciation for the friendly relations between Vietnam and Nauru, especially their cooperation at multilateral forums. He emphasized that despite the geographical distance and significant differences in size and population, the two countries have always found common ground on many international issues, including marine environmental protection, respect for international law, and climate change-related matters.

The Ambassador noted that the two countries have significant potential for cooperation, and Vietnam is ready to share its experience in agricultural development, trade cooperation, and aquaculture and fishing.

Ambassador Pham Hung Tam urged Nauru and other Pacific island nations to actively support Vietnam's candidate for the position of Judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026-2035 term during the United Nations vote in June 2026.

The Nauru High Commissioner emphasized that as a small island nation vulnerable to climate change, especially rising sea levels, Nauru finds common ground with Vietnam in strengthening close coordination at global multilateral forums to promote international climate commitments and environmental protection.

Relying entirely on imported food supplies, Nauru hopes Vietnam will enhance trade exchanges and supply essential consumer goods to ensure food security for Nauru. Nauru welcomes Vietnamese businesses seeking opportunities for sustainable seafood fishing, aquaculture, infrastructure development, as well as promoting connectivity and people-to-people exchanges.

Both sides agreed that the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations will open a new chapter in bilateral friendship and cooperation, enabling both sides to enhance efforts to strengthen substantive cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of both nations and contribute positively to peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region. On this occasion, leaders of both countries will also exchange congratulatory messages.
