WVR - On the morning of September 15, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Anh Tuan met with Professor Ignacio Tirado, Secretary-General of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), during the UNIDROIT delegation's visit to Vietnam.

During the meeting, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Anh Tuan highly valued UNIDROIT's role in harmonizing and unifying private law. Notably, the model laws and significant international conventions developed by UNIDROIT have been widely adopted by the business community and investors.

The visit of the UNIDROIT Secretary-General holds significance as Vietnam is actively refining its institutions, building, and implementing laws with a renewed mindset to unlock resources for the country's development in the new era. According to the Deputy Minister, high-quality legal documents aligned with international standards from UNIDROIT can serve as valuable references for Vietnam in constructing a modern legal system that meets practical demands.

Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan expressed gratitude for UNIDROIT's collaboration with Vietnam in promoting the Research Initiative to develop an international legal framework for the cross-border carbon credit market at the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). He urged UNIDROIT to enhance legal cooperation, provide consultancy, and support capacity building for Vietnam in law development and improvement, especially in green economy, digital economy, and science and technology sectors.

Additionally, Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan requested UNIDROIT to consider accepting Vietnamese officials, lecturers, researchers, and students for internships, work, and research at the Organization to train and foster high-level legal human resources for Vietnam.

The UNIDROIT Secretary-General expressed his pleasure in visiting Vietnam to strengthen and develop cooperative relations between the two sides. He noted that Vietnam's cooperation priorities align perfectly with UNIDROIT's goals and mission.

The documents developed by UNIDROIT, including the Luxembourg Protocol on Railways and the Protocol on Mining, Agriculture, and Construction, as well as the Convention on Stolen Cultural Property, align with Vietnam's areas of interest and legal improvement direction.

Mr. Ignacio Tirado expressed his admiration for the innovative mindset in legal development and institutional refinement directed by the leadership of the Party and State of Vietnam.

In his role as Secretary-General, he affirmed his readiness to promote cooperation with Vietnam in building and perfecting the private law framework and training international legal experts. He suggested that Vietnam consider joining the Organization and adopting UNIDROIT's documents.

Also on the morning of September 15, the Department of International Law and Treaties, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized a Seminar on UNIDROIT's legal documents. Representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Science and Technology, several law training institutions, and related units of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the Seminar.

The delegates engaged in lively discussions to explore UNIDROIT's conventions, model laws, and legal studies, as well as propose solutions to enhance cooperation between the two sides in the future, including the prospect of joining the Organization.

UNIDROIT (International Institute for the Unification of Private Law) is an independent intergovernmental organization headquartered in Rome, Italy. The Institute's primary objective is to study the needs and methods for modernizing, harmonizing, and coordinating private law, particularly commercial law, among countries and groups of countries. Since its re-establishment in 1940, UNIDROIT has had 65 member countries from five different continents.
