Vietnam and SCG: Partnering for a Sustainable ASEAN Future

As one of Southeast Asia’s leading industrial conglomerates, SCG is steadily delivering on its commitment to becoming a model ASEAN enterprise through practical actions in each local market, where Vietnam stands out as a strategic highlight.

Building a sustainable development ecosystem

In Vietnam, SCG operates 28 member companies across three key sectors: Cement & Building Materials, Chemicals, and Packaging. Businesses such as Binh Minh Plastics, Duy Tan Plastics, Vina Kraft Paper, Song Gianh Cement, and the Long Son Petrochemicals Complex (LSP) play pivotal roles in driving economic growth while fostering long-term sustainable value for local communities.

As a strategic partner in multiple countries, SCG promotes regional collaboration through platforms such as the ESG Symposium and the Circular Economy Forum, with a strong focus on its ESG 4 Plus strategy. In Vietnam, SCG aligns closely with national priorities like the Net Zero 2050 target and the attraction of high-quality FDI - driven by innovation, responsible investment, and enhanced community engagement - to advance long-term sustainable development.

Aiming for Long-Term Sustainable Benefits

On the path to low-carbon growth, SCG focuses on technological innovation and the development of eco-friendly products. Notable examples include SCG Low Carbon cement, which reduces CO₂ emissions by 20%, and SCG Smartboard Ultra, a lightweight cement board certified with an international Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

In the packaging and chemicals sector, SCGP and SCGC are undergoing significant green transformations. Duy Tan Plastics has introduced the Mussel line made from recycled materials, while Binh Minh Plastics has launched eco-friendly plastic pipes, aiming to promote circular consumption and resource efficiency.

This innovation strategy is exemplified by the Long Son Petrochemicals Complex (LSP) in Ba Ria–Vung Tau, a flagship project with a total investment of over USD 5 billion. As Vietnam’s first fully integrated petrochemical complex, it supplies 1.4 million tons of polyolefins annually for domestic use and export. SCG is investing an additional USD 500 million to switch production feedstock from naphtha to ethane - helping cut emissions and improve operational efficiency. This enhances Vietnam’s petrochemical capacity and strengthens regional supply chain resilience by reducing dependence on external markets.

Beyond technological advancement, SCG recognises that people are the core driving force behind sustainable development. In 2025, SCG will mark the 19th anniversary of its Sharing the Dream scholarship program, which has supported thousands of Vietnamese students, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds. At the same time, SCG fosters a transparent, multicultural, and continuously innovative workplace. SCG’s member companies in Vietnam are implementing various green initiatives - from smart factory models and carbon audits to closed-loop manufacturing - affirming the group’s commitment to building a sustainable future in partnership with Vietnam.

Beyond Vietnam, SCG’s presence and initiatives across ASEAN represent its broader vision of collective regional progress. By aligning its business practices with the national priorities of host countries and facilitating platforms for public-private dialogue, SCG plays a catalytic role in shaping a more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive ASEAN future.
