The International Coffee Day resolution was proposed by Brazil and a core group of 18 countries, including Vietnam, with the co-sponsorship of 97 UN member states – the highest number among the draft resolutions considered by the 80th session of the General Assembly so far.
This demonstrates the broad interest and support from the international community for the role of the coffee industry in promoting economic and social development and sustainable livelihoods for millions worldwide.
The resolution emphasizes that coffee is not only an important agricultural commodity but also carries deep cultural and social values, closely linked to the lives and traditions of many nations.
The coffee industry significantly contributes to the livelihoods of millions of households, particularly smallholder farmers, while also generating substantial revenue for many developing countries.
The resolution also acknowledges the role of the global coffee value chain in promoting economic growth, creating sustainable jobs, contributing to poverty eradication, ensuring food security, promoting gender equality, and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
