UK Trade Minister to turbocharge trade with Vietnam

As part of his itinerary in Ho Chi Minh city, Minister Huddleston met with key British businesses already operating in Viet Namthe on ways to further strengthen and diversify our economic ties. Engaging with UK architecture firm Atlas, he emphasised the important role that British construction community have played in shaping Vietnam’s skyline, including East Asia’s 2nd tallest building Landmark 81.

While in the city, he also got to visit the British Council’s newest teaching centre here while they celebrated its 30 years of contribution to Vietnam’s educational landscape.
Speaking ahead of the visit, the UK International Trade Minister Nigel Huddleston said: “2023 marks 50 years of UK-Vietnam diplomatic relations. Our trade relationship has continued to strengthen as the UK-Vietnam trade totalled £6.9 billion in 2022, an increase of 29% from 2021 and almost double the figure from 2013.
I’m looking forward to meeting with my counterparts in Vietnam to break new ground and help more UK businesses access this dynamic market.”

Travelling to Hanoi, Minister Huddleston met was set to meet with Vice Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thi Thang. He expressed his gratitude for Vietnam’s support of the UK’s accession to the CPTPP – the Indo-Pacific trade bloc now worth £12 trillion in GDP. The discussions was also focused on around innovative strategies to further deepen trade ties between the two countries.
The highlight of Minister Huddleston’s visit was to co-host the 13th UK – Vietnam Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) and the Trade Committee of our bilateral Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA). The UK and Vietnam had productive conversations across a wide range of sectors, including education, agriculture, finance fintech, healthcare, renewable energy and technology. Both sides agreed to have further conversations on the regulatory framework in these areas.
