At the invitation of King Frederik X of Denmark and the Queen, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam To Lam and his spouse Ngo Phuong Ly will pay a state visit to the Kingdom of Denmark from October 19-21.

Assessing the significance of this event, in a statement to the press, Danish Ambassador Lina Gandløse Hansen emphasized: “This year, Denmark and Vietnam celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations; this state visit is an occasion to honor the strong friendship that the two countries have diligently cultivated over decades. In a world undergoing significant changes, it is particularly important for small and medium-sized countries like Denmark and Vietnam to strengthen relations and enhance cooperation. With the visit of General Secretary, President To Lam, we are opening a new chapter in the partnership between the two countries.”

According to the Danish Embassy, during the visit, the two sides will focus on discussing key topics including trade and investment, green solutions, energy, innovation, education, sustainable food, culture, as well as bilateral and international cooperation issues.

In a statement to the press, the Danish Embassy highlighted the friendship between the two peoples, built on a deeply connected historical foundation, with the Danish Royal Family having a special affection for Vietnam as Prince Henrik spent five years of his childhood in Hanoi before returning to Denmark for his studies.

Over more than half a century since officially establishing diplomatic relations in 1971, the two countries have continuously elevated their cooperation through significant milestones, from the state visit to Vietnam by Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik in 2009, the establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership in 2013, to the visit of Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary Elizabeth in 2022 with a delegation of 35 businesses.

The visit coincides with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, marking an important historical milestone as this is the second state visit between the leaders of Vietnam and Denmark.

Notably, in 2023, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh officially declared the establishment of a Green Strategic Partnership, creating a solid framework for sustainable development cooperation between the two nations.

Bilateral cooperation has also seen a strategic shift from development support to equal and mutually beneficial trade-investment partnerships.

Between 1993 and 2015, Denmark supported Vietnam with a total of 5.5 billion Danish Krone (DKK) in development aid (ODA). To date, government-level cooperation has become a core pillar in key areas such as energy, food safety, healthcare, technical education, and statistics.

Currently, about 150 Danish enterprises are operating in Vietnam, making Denmark the third-largest European investor in the country.

According to the Danish Statistics Agency, bilateral trade turnover in 2025 is expected to reach 11.3 billion DKK, making Vietnam Denmark's 40th largest trading partner, affirming the vast and comprehensive cooperation potential between the two economies in the new development phase.
