The inauguration was held ceremoniously at Santiago de Cali University, in the city of Cali, approximately 500 km southwest of the capital Bogota. It was attended by delegations from over 90 countries and 20 international organizations, including many heads of state and government leaders such as King Felipe VI of Spain and the Presidents of Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic.

In his speech at the ceremony, the new President Abelardo de la Espriella delivered a strong message, marking a significant shift in the country's governance policies. He emphasized a pivot towards stringent security and economic measures, stating, “One of the fundamental priorities of the government I lead will be to enforce territorial control. If we do not control our cities and rural areas, we will lose our sovereignty.”

To realize this, President Abelardo announced the cessation of peace negotiations with armed groups in favor of robust military measures. He committed to building "super prisons" to detain criminals and granting additional powers to the Armed Forces and police.

He affirmed that the fight against drugs would be a top priority, stating, “Coca plants will have to make way for coconut, palm, and other legal crops.”

He stated that the government would immediately implement significant spending cuts, projected to be up to 40%, to reduce the budget deficit. This includes plans to close 14 foreign representative offices in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean.

On this occasion, Ambassador Vu Trung My conveyed congratulations from General Secretary and President To Lam and extended an invitation for an early visit to Vietnam to the new President Abelardo de la Espriella. He affirmed that Vietnam always values the friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Colombia.

Vietnam and Colombia established diplomatic relations in January 1979 and have significant potential for bilateral development. The two-way trade turnover in 2025 reached 888.9 million USD and is expected to hit 1 billion USD in 2026, making Colombia Vietnam's fifth-largest trading partner in Latin America.

The two countries are actively promoting cooperation in economics, trade, agriculture, energy, culture, and various other fields.
