Smart city: An urgent need of metropolitans in Viet Nam and the world
Along with digital transformation, smart cities are becoming a new development of cities in the era of intelligentisation, helping cities to optimize resources and develop sustainably.

On November 2, the ASOCIO - Viet Nam Smart City Summit 2021 was officially launched under the theme "Smart city within the framework of Viet Nam and international cooperation".
Attending the opening session of the conference were Mr. Nguyen Huy Dung - Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, ASOCIO Chairman David Wong, and officials and leaders of 59 provinces and cities in 70 online bridge points. A total of more than 1,300 delegators participated in the event from 12 countries and economies in the region.
In the opening remark, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Huy Dung said: “Under the mission of leading and orienting the national digital transformation process in general, the Ministry of Information and Communications has soon issued a number of guiding documents in the field of ICT to create a framework for developing smart cities, including the ICT Reference Framework, the kit of KPIs for smart city development and the contents of information technology (IT) application to provide service as well as smart city utilities.

However, developing smart city is a new issue not only for Viet Nam but also for other countries, requiring us to constantly learn, exchange and summarize practical implementation experiences both domestically and internationally”.
Deputy Minister Pham Huy Dung affirmed: “ASOCIO - Viet Nam Smart City Summit 2021 is a great opportunity for Vietnamese as well as international regulators, experts, scholars and the digital business community to share, discuss and update trends and experiences in smart city construction”.
Also at the event, Mr. Nguyen Van Khoa, President of VINASA stressed: “Building smart cities is not only an inevitable trend but also an urgent need of cities in Viet Nam and around the world.
Over the past two years, the Covid-19 outbreak has been promoting more strongly the process of building and developing smart cities with the issues of data collection and management, solutions for epidemic prevention and control, planning, operation and management for provinces and cities, especially in the period of recovery and development”.
According to Mr. Khoa, along with digital transformation, smart cities are becoming a new development method of metropolitans in the era of intelligence, helping cities to optimize resources, develop sustainably, bring safer and more convenient utilities for people, and develop a prosperous society.

Meanwhile, Mr. David Wong, Chairman of ASOCIO said that, currently, more than half of the world's population lives in cities. By 2050, nearly 7 out of 10 people will live in cities.
Despite covering only 2% of the world's area, cities account for more than 70% of global carbon emissions and consume 60-80% of energy.
Rapid urbanization has created additional challenges such as social inequality, traffic congestion, water pollution and related health problems.
Therefore, according to Mr. Wong, under the theme of smart cities, this conference is relevant to many post-Covid-19 global developments.
Over the past 5 years, the development trend of the smart city is still a hot topic and has received attention as well as investment from economies in the region.
Governments of ASEAN member countries have also responded to the establishment of the Smart City Network (ASCN) with the participation of 26 cities in the region. ASOCIO has established its own Smart City Committee to promote this trend.
In Viet Nam, the Prime Minister has approved the Project on sustainable smart city development in Viet Nam for the period 2018-2025, towards 2030. Over the past 5 years, 54/63 provinces and cities in Viet Nam have been constructing smart cities.
In which, the Southeast region has the highest percentage of provinces that have implemented smart cities projects (6/6 localities). In addition, 30 provinces and cities have approved the Smart City Development Scheme/Program/Plan; 15 provinces and cities have approved the ICT Architecture for smart city development; 38 provinces and cities have deployed Provincial IOC Centers; 21 provinces and cities have deployed IOC Centers at provincial levels.
Da Nang city of Viet Nam has been honored for this effort not only awarded with the Viet Nam Smart City Award for 2 consecutive years, in 2020 and 2021 but also the ASOCIO Smart City Award in 2019.
The COVID-19 pandemic not only did not restrain the Smart City trend but even accelerated the development of this process. Cities are considering Smart City and digital transformation as a key factor in helping them quickly recover from the pandemic.
This can be clearly seen through the strong development of online public service platforms, smart education, smart health service. Besides that, executive management, social welfare services are digitally transformed and strongly intelligentsia in most cities around the world and in the region.
The sharing and linkage between cities, along with the cooperation of technology businesses in this trend, will help cities return to the pace of development, people's lives will soon be peaceful and prosperous.
| The ASOCIO - Viet Nam Smart City Summit 2021 co-organized by Viet Nam Software and IT Services Association (VINASA) and Asia-Oceania Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO) takes place in 5 days, from November 2-6 on the online platform. This annual event is held for the 5th time and is expected to have over 10,000 delegates to attend and discuss in 15 conference sessions, business networking activities, and online exhibitions. |
