The delegation of the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK took a souvenir photo during a working visit to the Newhaven Museum.

The above information was informed by the local authorities to Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK Do Minh Hung during his recent visit and working session to the town of Newhaven in Lewes, East Sussex, England, where the young man Nguyen Tat Thanh (President Ho Chi Minh) is said to have set foot during his time working on the Newhaven-Dieppe (France) ferry after World War I.

The bronze statue of Uncle Ho is a gift from the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Management Board, through the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK, to the Newhaven Museum in 2013 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his arrival in the UK on his journey to find a way to save the country. This is the second time the statue of Uncle Ho has been restored, after the first time in 2023.

At the meeting, Ambassador Do Minh Hung affirmed that the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK will closely coordinate and support the authorities and the Newhaven Museum in the project to restore the area displaying the statue of Uncle Ho, and at the same time provide more documents about President Ho Chi Minh.

The two sides affirmed to continue to promote the traditional friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and the town with a history associated with President Ho Chi Minh.

Mr. Graham Amy, a member of the Town Council and Chairman of the Newhaven Museum, said that in addition to the bronze statue, the Museum also displays artifacts related to President Ho Chi Minh such as a model of Uncle Ho's stilt house and a model of a paddle steamer, the type of ship used on the Dieppe-Newhaven route that Uncle Ho traveled.

According to Mr Amy, the exhibits at the Museum show the connection between Uncle Ho and Newhaven, which is the basis for promoting the friendship and connection between Vietnam and the town. Many Vietnamese tourists have come to Newhaven, visited the Museum and the memorial stele of President Ho Chi Minh at West Quay, Newhaven port to learn about where President Ho Chi Minh came and worked during his time in the UK.

Ms. Annie Lorys, Vice President of the Newhaven Chamber of Commerce, said that the connection between Newhaven and Vietnam has created an interesting place for the town. Many people have learned about this historical connection, thus creating an interest in Newhaven, making the town attractive to many Vietnamese tourists.

Meanwhile, President of the Newhaven Chamber of Commerce Mike Shorer assessed that the special relationship between Vietnam and Newhaven has created a connection between the business communities of the two sides, which was established nearly 10 years ago. The Newhaven Chamber of Commerce has members investing in manufacturing in Vietnam, and he hopes that the two sides will continue to expand business cooperation, especially as more and more Vietnamese people are interested in Newhaven.

In Newhaven, Ambassador Do Minh Hung visited and laid flowers at the memorial stele of President Ho Chi Minh at West Quay, Newhaven Port, right at the mouth of the Ouse River flowing into the English Channel.
