The People's Committee of Quang Tri Province stated that the construction of the museum is necessary given the increasingly diverse cultural consumption needs of the people, especially the younger generation. Additionally, it holds significant importance in preserving, recreating history, and educating about traditions.
According to the timeline, the project will be implemented during the period 2026–2028 with main construction items and the collection of documents and artifacts.
In 2029, the project will complete interior work, install displays, and train operational personnel. The project is expected to be inspected, handed over in the second quarter of 2030, and inaugurated in the fourth quarter of the same year.
This will be a national-level museum, not only reflecting the war memories in Quang Tri but also extending to the history of the resistance against the United States across the country, with Quang Tri as a focal connection point.
According to the proposal, the museum focuses on conveying two core themes: "war memories" and "peace aspiration". "War memories" will be depicted through events, stories, and images from the period after the Geneva Accords in 1954 to April 30, 1975, reflecting both the losses and the resilient spirit and determination for independence and national unity.
Alongside, "peace aspiration" is emphasized as a continuous value, expressing the desire for a life without war, aiming towards national reconciliation, international cooperation, and sustainable development.
The combination of these two themes aims to create a contrasting yet unified message between the past and the future, contributing to the spirit of overcoming pain and focusing on building the nation.
Regarding the exhibition space, the museum will include a permanent exhibition area and a thematic exhibition area, with a tour route designed to follow the content flow from the ceremonial space, to the war memories area, peace aspiration, and ending with an experiential – reflective space.
The exterior area is expected to feature large-scale artifacts such as combat vehicles of the Vietnam People's Army, weapons, and equipment of the US military and the former Saigon government, along with a bomb and mine exhibition area and a sculpture garden.
Notably, the memorial space will be designed solemnly to honor Heroes, Heroic Vietnamese Mothers, and compatriots who sacrificed during the war.
The People's Committee of Quang Tri Province hopes that upon completion, the project, linked with the special national relic Hien Luong – Ben Hai, will create a significant highlight on the "Central Heritage Journey", contributing to attracting tourists and promoting local socio-economic development.
The "War Memories and Peace Aspiration" Museum is expected not only to be a large-scale cultural institution but also to become a new symbol of Quang Tri in its journey of integration and development, spreading the message of peace and human values to domestic and international audiences.
