Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly (NA) Tong Thi Phong made that statement while delivering a speech at the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-141) in Belgrade, Serbia.
Vietnam consistently follows diplomatic policy of independence and self-reliance, highlighting multilateralism, rule of laws and common principles in international relations, Phong said, adding that the nation is concerned about maintaining the international order on the basis of laws, common agreements and conventions between nations.
Vietnam complies regulations in the international treaties of universal value such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982, addresses disputes with peaceful measures in line with international law as well as takes part in a number of multilateral international treaties within the United Nations and other international organizations.
The Vietnamese National Assembly continues advocating the completion of the domestic legal framework, enhancing enforcement monitoring and actively joining parliamentary diplomatic activities to strengthen information and experience sharing, she said.
The country will preside over the non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in the 2020-2021 tenure, ASEAN Chairmanship and the 2020 ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Chair, Phong added.
She asked for developing parliamentary diplomacy, upholding the role and mission of the IPU for peace and democracy based on laws and respecting the equality among sovereign states.
It is necessary to strengthen cooperation between the IPU and the UN, international organizations and parliaments in all sectors, focusing on such issues as sustainable development, poverty reduction, nutrition, gender equality, sustainable management and use of natural resources, including maritime resources and accelerate connectivity between nations and parliaments in policy-making in response to climate change.
The IPU-141, held on early October 14 in Belgrade, Serbia under the theme “Strengthening international law: Parliamentary roles and mechanisms, and the contribution of regional cooperation”, attracted over 1,700 parliamentarians from 50 parliaments and representatives of international organizations.
