Love from the Southern Region

The summer camp 2017 including visits to many provinces and cities such as: Ho Chi Minh City, Tien Giang, Dong Thap, An Giang, Kien Giang, Can Tho, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau…has brought incredible feelings for over 100 overseas youths from 25 countries around the world.

Travel to learn

Nadezhda Kolotova's student (Nguyen Hong Anh) from Russia shared: “This is such a special summer camp because not only did I explore the southwest regions but also listened to local people telling heroic stories of the fatherland's Iron Bulwark”.

Not only was she able to experience firsthand the Floating Market – an unique type of trade activity on Mekong Delta – the young undergraduate of National St. Petersburg University’s Oriental Studies Department was very excited to learn some local slang. She shared that she couldn’t quite understand the Southern accent in the beginning. She could only smile and nod in agreement. But once she understood, it turned out to be very endearing.

Hong Anh visited Nguyen Sinh Sac’s Tomb, a historic site in Cao Lanh city (Dong Thap province). She was very grateful of the opportunity because her graduation thesis is on the analysis and comparison of President Ho Chi Minh’s biographies. After researching the life of the father of Uncle Ho, she realized that He inherited his father’s ambition and love for Vietnam.

She shared that her mother encourages her to return to Vietnam with the advice: “Traveling widen one’s horizon”. With this trip, she learned to be independent, to make friends, and to manage oneself and one’s interactions in a community. She also shared that the summer camp was an effective way to practice mother tongue every day, as well as a chance to explore the Southern scenery. “Tomorrow I will continue my itinerary to new regions. I am so eager to tell my friends of how friendly and hospitable Vietnamese people are when I go home”, she said cheerfully.

Unlike Hong Anh, Sok Serey, a male student from Cambodia, finds himself most interested in the production process of the Southwestern specialties. “This reality trip brought me many unforgettable moments and worthy experiences that teaches me more about our native land, especially the Southwest area. In my opinion, the beauty of Southwest Vietnam needs to be more strongly promoted to the rest of the world, so that the ecotourism industry of the region will be further developed and thus attract more tourists”, he shared.

To Nguyen Thi Bich Dao from France, every day she spent and every place she stepped foot in were full of incredible discoveries and experiences.“After this trip, my self awareness has changed significantly. I think I need to be more active and make more effort in my studies to do more for our country. More importantly, I want to connect overseas youths with the Vietnamese youth community”, she said.

No place like home

Le Dao Hong Long, a World Karate Championship gold medalist, 2016 European Karate Champion, and 2017 European Karate Champion in both individual and team categories, shared with us: “There is no place like home”. Attending this year’s camp, he said: “Even though I was born in the Czech Republic, but in my heart, I’m Vietnamese and I have always loved my country. I am very happy to visit my home country where people are full of love and kindness. I hope that I can contribute to my country in the future.”

As for Giang Son Arrighini, a student from Italy, this camp was an opportunity to gain new interesting knowldege from people around the world. One of many interesting topics that caught his attention are historical wars, especially the heroic sacrifices and grieving losses that Southern people have suffered.

Tran Nam Anh, a student from the United States also shares the same sentiments as Arrighini as he told us: “I am very impressed with the Cu Chi Tunnels because this place reminds me of a time with guns, bombs and bloodshed but people fought with all their heart for their country. It fascinates me even more that the people in Cu Chi could create such a miracle with only hoes and shovels. Being lucky enough to be born in a time of peace has made me realize that it is important to study to be worthy of the sacrifice our ancestors made.”
