Celebration of International Day of Yoga in Hanoi attracted over 1,000 people

The resolution moved by Indian Prime Minister Modi in September 2014 at UN General Assembly (UNGA) to declare the International Day of Yoga (IDY) in recognition of Yogas’ health benefits for the world get the resounding support of 177 member countries including Vietnam. Subsequently, the UNGA in December 2014 declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga to promote healthy living and well-being around the world.

Standing Member of the Council of Ethnic Minorities of the National Assembly, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam-India Parliamentary Friendship Group Luu Van Duc, Standing Vice President of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Thich Thanh Nhieu, General Secretary of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Thich Duc Thien, President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) Nguyen Phuong Nga, Vice Standing Chairwoman Hanoi Union of Friendship Organization Tran Thi Phuong, Vietnam-India Friendship Association Hanoi Chairwoman Phan Lan Tu and official representatives from various other ministries joined the event and performed yoga postures. Over 1,000 yoga practitioners and enthusiasts attended the event.

Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Sandeep Arya said that Yoga is an ancient Indian practice drawn from Sanskrit word “union” signifying unity between a person’s body, mind (or consciousness) and surrounding (nature). It has been recognized by the United Nations as a holistic approach to health and well-being.

The wide interest across Vietnam in Yoga is heartening and links with strong belief in health and exercising that was also emphasized by President Ho Chi Minh. IDY events are taking place in at least 35 provinces this year.

“I encourage you all to try practicing yoga to feel its real benefits and perhaps adopt it as a regular habit for life,” he said.
On the same day, the Embassy of India in Hanoi and Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City also organized Yoga events, in collaboration with respective provincial committees, in Quang Tri, Bac Giang, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Dak Lak, Bac Lieu, Vinh Long, Kon Tum.
