The warm refugee days

For Vietnamese living in Ukraine seeking refuge when the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in February 2022, the warm affection and concern of the representative missions and community have helped them strongly maintain their faith during the most difficult time.

It was these days that Mr Nguyen Minh Tuyen, President of the Vietnam National Union of Students in Budapest received the active connections of the Vietnamese Embassy in Hungary and associations when coming to border gates, railway stations,... They came to pick up Vietnamese evacuees from Ukraine to flee!

Always accompanying the associations with a noble gesture, all the embassy’s leaders and staff exerted their best to implement the key tasks.

Staff divided responsibilities; some contacted authorities to understand regulations, others handled phone calls to guide, receive, and process information about the needs of the Vietnamese community. Some were on duty at train stations, some handled urgent documents while the others visited, encouraged, and supported community members with essentials.

In Slovakia, in addition to supporting Vietnamese refugees from Ukraine, the Vietnamese Embassy also connected with embassies of neighboring countries and Vietnamese associations to provide information to Vietnamese citiezens about the difficulties when entering the country, addresses that can support new residences…

At that time, the delegations of the Vietnamese Embassy led by Ambassador Vu Quang Minh with associations in Germany visited and gave presents to evacuees from Ukraine currently staying at the Reception Center in Eisenhüttenstadt, Brandenburg.

Mr Jens Dorschmann, Deputy Director of the Center highly appreciated Ambassador Vu Quang Minh for spending time to visit, talk and encourage Vietnamese taking refuge here. He said that the Vietnamese Embassy was also the first foreign representative agency to visit, encourage and provide support for citizens from Ukraine to seek refuge in Germany.

Ms Hoang Thi Van, who has lived in Ukraine for 34 years, was touched by the concern of the Party, State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Vietnamese Embassy cadres in Russia for evacuated citizens. Not only did the Embassy coordinate the association of Krasnodar Province to arrange accommodation but the Embassy was also to support Vietnamese citizens to return to Moscow safely.

Steadfast in the earthquake epicenter

As a Vietnamese living in Turkiye for over a decade, Mr Bui Xuan Mai has never forgotten the terrible disaster that suddenly struck his “second homeland” and a week of volunteering with the Vietnamese rescue team in epicenter areas of the earthquake in February this year.

Mr Bui Xuan Mai appreciated and recognised that citizen protection work was implemented rapidly by the Vietnamese Embassy in Turkiye.

Along with contacting focal points and posting information about the hotline for people to know, 3 days after the earthquake, the Embassy sent officials to Adana - a very close place to epicenter areas of the devastating earthquake, ready to assist Vietnamese citizens if needed.

At this time, unable to directly visit Adiyaman, another heavily affected area, Ambassador Do Son Hai had asked Mr Mai to visit Vietnamese families in this area and at the same time reminded citizens if they needed any assistance to immediately report to the Embassy. At the visiting families, Mr. Mai encouraged and visited people on behalf of the Embassy. They are touched because the Embassy and the community still came to support despite the remote roads and earthquake-affected areas. This timely support and encouragement significantly helped them to stabilize and overcome the disaster's aftermath.

Overcoming difficulties together in the confict

During firestorms of the Israel - Hamas armed conflict, Vietnamese Embassy in Israel has coordinated with Vietnamese Liaison Committee in Israel to continually maintain information focal points to update Vietnamese community the latest information about war situation, measures to ensure security and safety as well as policies to protect citizens in the country.

The overseas Vietnamese said they felt safer and more secure when the Vietnamese Embassy regularly kept in touch with focal points of communities, conducted field surveys to be ready for protection options according to the wishes of citizens and the actual situation.

Recently, the delegation of the Vietnamese Embassy has held a visit to Vietnamese overseas and trainees in a warm meeting at Ms Hong Shurarys’s home, Liaison Committee of the Vietnamese Association, in Netanya city, central region of Israel.

Mrs Nguyen Thi Thuc, Ph.D student at Ben Gurion University in Negev, said that overseas Vietnamese in this areas were closely following information sources from the press, social platforms and guidance and updates from the Vietnamese Embassy to ensure their own safety, promote the spirit of solidarity to overcome difficulties, support each other to continue to maintain work and study.

It can be said that the continuous exchange of guidance from schoolteachers and the Vietnamese Embassy on security and safety measures has indeed bolstered the confidence of the trainees to persist with their studies and vocational orientation in Israel.
