Vietnamese heritages as bridge to the world

Vietnam has many natural landscapes and valuable heritages. Now it boasts nine heritages recognized by UNESCO as World Natural and Cultural Heritages, including five cultural heritages, three natural heritages and one mixed heritage. The world heritages in Vietnam have been actively contributing to the country’s sustainable socio-economic development.

These titles show the international community’s appreciation for Vietnam’s heritage and cultural values, making it an attractive cultural destination. In 2022, Vietnam was elected to UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, with four more internationally recognised titles/heritages.

In the work of registering, preserving and promoting the value of Vietnam’s world cultural and natural heritages, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs serves as an important bridge that helps the international community better understand the global values of Vietnamese culture and heritages, as well as the culture, country and people of Vietnam.

The recognition shows not only the heritages’ own values but also the world’s sentiments towards us. They love our culture with Central Highlands gongs, Ca tru (ceremonial singing), Xoan singing, Thang Long Imperial Citadel, and Hue royal court music.

I believe that with our recognized heritages, the world’s people and international organizations will understand more about the Vietnamese people. General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong said never has our country had the fortune, potential, and international position and prestige as it does today.

In my opinion, the fortune we have is not only material, but also the trust of the international community in Vietnam and this fortune needs to be promoted. Vietnam will increasingly develop and have an increasingly higher position in the international arena. Those working in the fields of diplomacy and culture should coordinate with each other to both protect and honour the country’s cultural heritages. At the same time, people also need to treasure the attained diplomatic achievements and must be responsible for preserving and promoting those achievements.

Raising the country's position and prestige

It can be said that the international community appreciates the value of Vietnam’s national heritage and culture, as well as its policy of always treasuring culture and identifying it as the spiritual foundation of society, the goal and motivation for sustainable development.

To promote cultural diplomacy and heritage diplomacy in the coming time, in my opinion, it is necessary to continue researching and innovating forms of promoting cultural values and the images of the Vietnamese country, culture and people. At the same time, we should integrate cultural promotion activities into trade promotion and national branding programmes so that culture truly becomes an endogenous strength to attract external resources.

Besides, to increase Vietnam’s recognition globally, we need to promote soft power. The Cultural Diplomacy Strategy until 2030, which was promulgated by the Prime Minister on November 30, 2021, determines that cultural diplomacy contributes to promoting the images of Vietnam's country, culture and people to the international community, thus honouring the intelligence, qualities, characteristics, and noble ideals of the Vietnamese people and elevating the value of Vietnamese culture as well as arouse the aspiration to develop the country, strengthen soft power, and enhance national position.

It can be said that cultural diplomacy has been flexibly and skillfully applied by our predecessors in the struggles for national protection and construction. During war time, we always affirmed and upheld the peace-loving spirit. Nowadays, in the Doi Moi (Renovation) period, the diplomatic sector has further promoted that spirit. Our diplomatic strategy has brought proud success. The reputation of Vietnamese representative agencies abroad is increasingly enhanced in the eyes of international friends.

Vietnam went through tough and fierce wars. Vietnam went through a difficult and fierce war. Vietnam's diplomatic missions have been an important bridge that helped peoples, countries and territories around the world properly understand Vietnam, a peace-loving country with a long-standing culture and rich identity. The world has increasingly seen Vietnamese people as friendly, hospitable, and responsible to the international community. Vietnam's voice and initiatives have received international support, resulting in the country’s higher position and reputation in the international arena.
