Vietnam leaves mark on promoting culture for sustainable development at the United Nations
WVR - On September 4, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution entitled “International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development 2027-2036”, spearheaded and promoted by Vietnam together with a core group comprising Cyprus, Italy, Laos, Qatar and Saint Kitts and Nevis, with 103 co-sponsoring countries.

The resolution designates the period 2027-2036 as the International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development, creating a long-term framework for countries and the international community to step up action and further integrate culture into development policies.
It identifies the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the focal point for implementing the Decade, in coordination with Member States to develop specific activities, programmes and action plans.
Introducing the resolution at the UN General Assembly, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, stressed that culture shapes identity, connects communities, inspires creativity and innovation, and contributes to livelihoods and sustainable development.
He said the International Decade would provide a framework for moving from awareness to action, mobilising political support and resources, promoting partnerships and sharing knowledge and experience, thereby giving culture a more prominent place on the global development agenda.

The adoption of the resolution by the UN General Assembly marks an important step forward in efforts to further integrate culture into the global development agenda, reaffirming the role of culture as a resource for creativity, economic growth, social cohesion and sustainable development.
In their statements, countries welcomed the initiative and affirmed the essential role of culture in sustainable development, promoting cooperation, dialogue and mutual understanding.
