The UN General Assembly has adopted a Resolution on preparations for the High-Level Conference on Disease Prevention and Control, co-chaired by Vietnam and Chile.

On September 5, the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution on preparations for the High-Level Conference on Disease Prevention and Control, co-chaired by Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, and Ambassador Paula Narvaez, Head of the Permanent Mission of Chile to the UN.

According to the Resolution, the High-Level Conference on Disease Prevention and Control will take place in September 2026 at the UN headquarters in New York during the High-Level Week of the 81st UN General Assembly, under the theme “Promoting a Multilateral and Intergenerational Approach in Prevention, Preparedness, and Response to Pandemics and Health Emergencies, Based on Equity and Solidarity”.

The Resolution also encourages broad participation at the highest level from member states, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, academia, the private sector, and communities to share and exchange lessons learned and enhance global cooperation in disease prevention and control.

The newly adopted Resolution emphasizes the urgent need to enhance readiness for future global health emergencies and advocates for a comprehensive approach, engaging all government agencies and society as a whole to achieve this goal.

The Resolution calls for strengthening multilateral commitments, promoting close cooperation between member states and UN agencies, particularly the World Health Organization (WHO), and underscores the necessity of ensuring equitable and timely development, distribution, and access to vaccines to address shortcomings in disease prevention, preparedness, and response.

The appointment of Vietnam as a co-coordinator of this Resolution by the President of the UN General Assembly is a recognition and trust from the international community in Vietnam’s achievements and positive contributions to global disease prevention and control efforts in recent times.

Speaking at the session, UN General Assembly Vice President Gheorghe Leucă, on behalf of member states, expressed gratitude to the two Ambassadors from Vietnam and Chile for their proactive and extensive consultations, significantly contributing to the advancement of preparations for this important and meaningful High-Level Conference.
