As a founding member of ASEAN, the Philippines remains at the forefront of pushing for ASEAN Centrality and the best interests of the region and its peoples. ASEAN is the fulcrum on which current regional security architecture balances and it has been performing this function credibly, owing to its success in espousing cooperation and cultivating peace and stability through consensus-building.
The Philippine is active in all community pillars of ASEAN. All three pillars are equally important to the Philippines to attain a rules-based, people-oriented and people-centered ASEAN community.
The Philippines remains steadfast in its commitment to ASEAN Community-building and has been supporting Vietnam’s “Cohesive and Responsive” theme and priorities during its 2020 Chairmanship. The Philippines lauds Vietnam for taking the lead in organizing ASEAN’s collective response to COVID-19 with the first meeting of the ASEAN Coordinating Council Working Group on Public Health Emergencies held via video conference on 31 March.
We expect Vietnam’s Chairmanship to continue this role in line with its other priorities in the three pillars. The Philippines also expects progress in Vietnam’s key deliverables such as the Mid-Term Review of the ASEAN blueprints, and the development of a Post-2025 ASEAN Community Vision, among others. The Philippines welcomes Vietnam’s initiative to include a special event on Women Empowerment in the Summits in 2020.
