Soci Hub: A cultural bridge in the heart of Hanoi

Not a classroom or a training centre, Soci Hub is becoming a rendezvous for multicultural encounters between young Vietnamese and international friends right in the heart of Hanoi.

A multicultural rendezvous in the heart of the capital

In the digital age, young people can connect with the world with just a tap on the screen. However, genuine human connections are becoming increasingly scarce. Understanding the need for a space for direct interaction, Soci Hub emerged as a solution to the integration challenge for the youth of the capital.

As a passionate project of the Centre for Sustainable Development Studies (CSDS), Soci Hub is not merely an office or a club but an "ecosystem" that celebrates diversity. From its inception, SOCI Hub has not positioned itself as a commercial language training centre but rather aims to create an open space where young people can meet, maintain community activities, and learn from one another.

Soci Hub creates a multicultural exchange space where young people actively connect and learn.

Mr. Don Tuan Phuong – Director of the Center for Sustainable Development Studies (CSDS) and Volunteers for Peace Vietnam (VPV) – shared about the "serendipity" that led to the project's formation: “After many years in social work, I realized that many young Vietnamese are enthusiastic about participating in social activities but lack a stable meeting space to connect and develop themselves. Therefore, Soci Hub was created as an open connection model where they can interact with each other and with international friends, gaining confidence and developing various skills.”

Breaking barriers through open interactive spaces

Unlike traditional classroom models, Soci Hub operates as an open space, with activities organised flexibly to meet community needs. Weekly, community class sessions and activities within the Language Hub framework are organised with diverse topics, from personal development to soft skills and multicultural communication.

At Soci Hub, the two-way discussion format allows participants to actively share their views, fostering continuous interaction among individuals from various countries. No longer facing significant language or cultural barriers, meetings at Soci Hub are gradually becoming a bridge between different cultures.

Activities at Soci Hub help develop skills and communication abilities in a multicultural environment.

For many young Vietnamese, the initial motivation for joining is to improve their language skills. However, the real-life experience process has helped them realise values beyond their initial goals. According to Dao Thi Huyen Trang, a project volunteer: “I joined Soci Hub to practice English and support community projects, but beyond expectations, what I gained was confidence, listening skills, and an open mindset towards differences.”

Soci Hub is not just a "gateway" for Vietnamese to see the world but also a "lens" for international friends to gain a deeper understanding of a modern Vietnam. Instead of the usual short-term travel experiences, international youth who come to Soci Hub immerse themselves in community life and explore local culture more deeply. Adam Jacob Samuel Schaub, a Swedish volunteer, shared: “Through the exchanges, I feel a young Vietnamese generation full of enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to share. Here, I learn about Vietnamese culture not just through books but also through direct conversations. It makes me feel much closer and more connected.”

Direct interactions help participants enhance confidence and adaptability in an international environment.

Small "cultural bridges" in the heart of Hanoi

From an organisational perspective, Soci Hub notes significant changes in participants, especially in confidence and communication skills. Many young people who were once hesitant to interact with foreigners have become more proactive in connecting and exchanging. Project representative – Mr. Don Tuan Phuong – emphasised: “Language is not the biggest barrier. What matters is how you accumulate international communication skills, communicate in a multicultural environment, and learn to work and collaborate with people from different cultures. This is the most crucial skill for young Vietnamese in today's globalisation era.”

In a broader sense, Soci Hub can be seen as a form of public diplomacy in everyday life. Through small-scale but regular activities, participants have the opportunity to introduce culture, lifestyle, and personal perspectives.

Each participant acts as a "cultural ambassador," helping spread the country's image naturally and authentically. These interactions are not official but have the potential to create long-lasting impacts.

In the context of globalisation, the demand for cultural exchange and learning is increasing. Spaces like Soci Hub provide young people with opportunities to access the world directly, fostering a global mindset. Besides enhancing personal skills, participants also have the chance to develop organisational, teamwork, and leadership skills through direct involvement in activity coordination. These are essential skills in many fields.

From a small-scale space, Soci Hub is gradually expanding its network of connections between individuals and communities. The relationships formed here do not just end within the framework of activities but continue to develop in real life.

In the future, as the demand for international cultural exchange continues to rise, models like Soci Hub promise to become a "skill charging station" for the youth and be more widely disseminated. This is not only a trend among young people but also an important part of society's integration process.

Exchange activities at Soci Hub help bridge cultural gaps in the context of globalisation.

From simple conversations to profound connections, Soci Hub is helping build cultural bridges in the heart of Hanoi. These connections not only help people better understand one another but also open up opportunities for future cooperation and sustainable development.
