Nga Bay is a city in the former Hau Giang province, located west of the Hau river. Covering an area of over 78 km2, this administrative unit is considered the economic center in the Northeastern part of the former Hau Giang province.
The city boasts a very special geographical location as it is the confluence of seven rivers (Cai Con, Quan Lo Phung Hiep, Lai Hieu, Mang Ca, Muong Lo, Xeo Dong, and Xeo Mon). These seven rivers form an important waterway network, connecting provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region.

Nga Bay is situated on National Highway 1, equidistant from the centers of Can Tho and the former Soc Trang city, approximately 30 km apart. It is also the starting point of the Quan Lo – Phung Hiep route connecting Can Tho and Ca Mau.
The Nga Bay market fronts both the river and the road, with over 200 businesses selling a wide range of goods, primarily agricultural products and general merchandise. Here, visitors can not only shop and explore the stalls but also discover dishes rich in the flavors of the Southwestern region.
The local government has invested in the embankment system, piers, and model boats at the floating market restoration site, marking the beginning of river and garden tours. These projects, once operational, contribute to urban beautification, creating scenic highlights and serving the recreational needs of locals and tourists.
Gia Lam Co Tu pagoda, covering more than 2,300 m2, is located along National Highway 1, passing through Nga Bay city. Built in 1940, it features distinctive Indian architecture. For nearly 40 years, Venerable Thich Hue Sanh (77 years old) has been the sole monk at the pagoda.
The site houses nearly 180 statues, but the pagoda's fame is largely attributed to the Xich Tho horse statue, approximately 3 meters tall and over 2 meters long. The statue was funded by a woman who donated 1 million VND in 1963. Over 60 years later, the statue's color remains vibrant despite never being repaired, and no one dares to alter its position.
Following the merger, Nga Bay city became two wards, Dai Thanh and Nga Bay, of Can Tho.
