On May 2, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, in collaboration with the International Council for the Day of Vesak (ICDV), inaugurated the Press Center at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Ho Chi Minh City. This center will facilitate media coverage for the upcoming Vesak celebrations.
The event coincides with significant national milestones: the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025) and the 80th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 – September 2, 2025).
Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha's Executive Council and Vice President and General Secretary of the ICDV 2025 Organizing Committee in Vietnam, announced that the main theme for this year's Vesak is "Solidarity and Tolerance for Human Dignity: Buddhist Wisdom for World Peace and Sustainable Development."
The opening ceremony is set for the morning of May 6, followed by thematic presentations. An international academic conference will be held on May 7, and the closing ceremony is scheduled for the morning of May 8.
Additional activities include the enshrinement and veneration of the Buddha's relics at Thanh Tâm Pagoda in Bình Chánh District from May 2 to 8, and the heart relic of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc at Vietnam Quoc Tu Pagoda in District 10 from May 3 to 10.
Most Venerable Thich Tho Lac, Head of the Culture Department of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, highlighted various cultural and artistic events planned during Vesak, such as a grand lantern festival for national peace on the evening of May 6 and an international Buddhist art performance at the Sa La Theater.
Hosting the United Nations Day of Vesak 2025 offers Vietnam an opportunity to showcase its image as a peace-loving, friendly, and harmonious nation. It also underscores the country's consistent policy of respecting and ensuring freedom of belief and religion, as well as the achievements of religious communities over the past 50 years of national reunification.
The event reaffirms the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha's role within the global Buddhist community and contributes to enhancing mutual understanding, cultural exchange, and friendship between Vietnam and international partners.
The Ho Chi Minh City Vesak Declaration is anticipated to be Vietnam's contribution to the United Nations' mission of achieving the Millennium Development Goals for peace and sustainable development.
