The visit takes place as Vietnam and Sri Lanka mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (July 21, 1970–2025) — a significant milestone that reflects the enduring friendship and growing cooperation between the two nations.

Vietnam and Sri Lanka share longstanding cultural and religious ties rooted in Buddhism, as well as a history of solidarity during struggles for national independence and development. Over the past five decades, the two countries have strengthened cooperation in trade, education, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges, while also maintaining close coordination at multilateral forums such as the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement.

President Dissanayake’s participation in the UN Day of Vesak — one of the most significant global Buddhist events — highlights the spiritual closeness between the two nations. Vietnam successfully hosted the Vesak celebration in 2008, 2014, and 2019, with this the 20th edition, again expected to reinforce the country's international role in promoting peace and religious dialogue.

The visit is expected to deepen bilateral ties and open a new chapter in Vietnam–Sri Lanka relations, ushering in a promising era of closer partnership, mutual respect, and shared development.
