International arrivals to Vietnam hike in 2022

Vietnam saw approximately 3.7 million international arrivals in 2022, surging 23.3 times from the previous year, although it was shorter than the target.

The country's General Statistics Office provided the data on Monday. However, the arrivals were still much lower than in the pre-pandemic period in 2019. The number fell short of the target which was set at 5 million.

From January to December 2022, visitors entering the country by air amounted to nearly 3.3 million, accounting for 89.5 per cent of the total.

In 2022, roughly 2.6 million foreign visitors to Vietnam were from Asia, hiking 19.5 times compared to 2021.

The number of tourists from Europe, the Americas and Oceania also saw surges of 31.8 times, 67.6 times and 125.2 times respectively from the previous year.

Over 70% of international visitors to Vietnam were Asian tourists, with the largest number of tourists coming from Korea (763,900, equivalent to 26%), followed by the US (over 266,000, 9%).

Vietnam received a record number of over 18 million international arrivals in 2019, the last full year before the pandemic broke out.

Meanwhile, earnings from travelling services reached roughly VND22.9 trillion, 4.1 times higher than the figure recorded in the same period last year.

In 2020 and 2021, the number of international arrivals to Vietnam plunged 78.7 per cent and 95.9 per cent year on year respectively.

Vietnam targeted serving over 8 million overseas tourists in 2023, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

To achieve the target, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) developed a special email system as part of efforts aimed at promoting Vietnamese tourism at https://mail.vietnam.travel.

This is the first time the local tourism industry has set up an email system in order to serve tourism promotion activities. The purpose of the move is to enhance digital transformation in the tourism sector, with a greater focus placed on building tools and applications in a bid to increase the travel experience.
